Venetica
Venetica

« It's fun from the first moment on. Venetica offers a great introduction, a fascinating story, great quests and a very charming heroine. If you don't have the time for complex role playing games, but want something more than just an adventure game, then Venetica is for you. »
« The world of Venetica is beautiful and unique, but it suffers from some serious technical issues and an overall lack of polish. Still, with its fun, fast paced combat, good atmosphere and engaging quests it's a fine gaming experience nonetheless and a solid recommendation for those who are not looking for an all to deep role playing experience. »
« Venetica has a fascinating story, however, the game is not innovative enough to beat rival games of the same genre. »
« Venetica is a good Fable clone: the story is interesting, the gameplay easy to play. The only weak point is the bad graphic: the game isn't very enjoyable even on the newest computer. »
« And the good bits, for all their worth, are just that; good, but not classic. »
« While Venetica is completely playable, I never would have beaten it without a review assignment. Gamers deserve a little more incentive than the bare pleasure of leveling up and hoarding loot to no real end. Even if that's your only ambition, there are much more attractive and fun venues for it. The developers seem to have infused Venetica with at least a portion of their hearts, and I hate to see passion so wasted. Then again, I could be wrong, and Venetica is the dreary result of pure industry. »
« If you can ignore the many faults, Venetica can offer a pretty good experience. The story and the collecting of objects and new abilities ensure that you want to keep playing. But even without the little problems that plague the game, Venetica would have never been able to be something truly special. »
« Catchy storyline on one side, crappy RPG elements on the other… Venetica amazes with stunning visuals and attractive heroine but the game mechanics undermine the overall impression. [Feb 2010] »

« Venetica looks like a cross between Gothic and Fable. The only serious difference is that our main character is a young woman. It's not a very successful game compared to the series of games it was inspired by. It's normal that you probably haven't heard anything about the game. Now, 15 years after its release, there are aspects that are starting to look quite dated. There are many points where the animations and graphics suffer. The best looking character model in the game is, as you'd expect, the character we're playing as, but every other NPC has a very strange and mediocre design. I understand that the game is trying to look a fairy-tale-like, and this gave Venetica a bit of cuteness, which increased my tolerance for its poor graphics. But the animations have very stiff transitions and are blocked by invisible walls. The fact that our character can't jump is also a big drawback. The combat mechanics also seem quite troublesome. All the enemies we encounter do nothing but spam blocks, but when you block them in the same way, it's not as effective. I don't like the block system in the game at all and it seems almost useless. After blocking, it takes a lot of time before you can counterattack and you end up getting hit. At least in the early stages of the game. Also, your attacks are constantly interrupted by enemies. Even if you level fast, you can't easily improve your character. You have to go to a trainer first, but even then, most skills seem to be closed. I played for about 3 hours and reached level 8, but as far as I can see, there are only one or two skills that I can choose from the skill tree and they are not very useful in combat. Other than that, the story so far has been okay and can keep you curious about the rest, but I don't know how far it can go. The game has over 20 hours of gameplay as far as I can see, but it seemed too long for such a limited and small game. The main story missions are interesting to a point, but the remaining side missions seem to be just fetch and simple puzzles. You can choose not to do them, but then you'll have a hard time leveling up your character and finding the resources to get new equipment. The most important thing that redeems the negative aspects of the game is that at least it has an easy gameplay, so if you have some free time, give it a shot. »
« This is a solid 8 held back to a 7.5 due to 2 universal bugs that cause a crash (they can be avoided without consequence),no great side quests or guild progress, and several broken side quest pointers. The graphics are good enough for the modern age, though the men in this game are horribly ugly. You play a girl but there is nothing woke or man bashing here. The Story is interesting, the game is mostly linear in it's progression but does not prevent backtracking, and doing quests whenever you want. There were no interesting quests, but the main story was good. Combat was fun, but spells were a little broken because they get turned off on boss fights (the only spell you need is the green dot one, and the moonblade dot) Overall it was a refreshingly new game, from a new perspective, and at this point is far cheaper than it's value so with a pick up. It doesn't drone on but keeps you at a regular pace without taking you off on long tangents. Go here, go there, do some meaningless things along the way for xp/gold. I never found myself wanting more from the side quest category though, I was happy to continue with the meat of the game and develop along the way. »
« Surprisingly entertaining. To me this feels much more like a sequel to the great Gothic 2 (of the german school of RPG design) than Risen, which felt more like a remake. Nothing feels that special, but it hooked me. It helps you find joy in simple things. And the setting is quite nice and a bit different. It is a game with a small scope, but good for what it is. »
« Probably my favourite game that I've played in a long time. From a slightly removed point of view It's a very flawed RPG in the same vein as Risen or the Gothic series is, but I really did love this game. The aesthetic in both the design of the city of Venice and the design of characters has a ton of uniqueness and personality to it, and something about the game kept me playing constantly until I finally finished the it. The combat is definitely not great, and the story, while not terrible, and often interesting, is relatively weak compared to other RPGs. Regardless, the quests felt varied and the gameplay felt unique in key moments. Despite my high score for it, I wouldn't recommend it except for hardcore RPG fans who want an incredibly unique experience and are okay dealing with the many flaws this game has. »
