Children of Morta
Description (IGDB)
Children of Morta is a narrative driven hack and slash roguelike. Take on the role of a member of the Bergson family, the Guardians of Mount Morta, as you fight desperately against the Corruption. Experience not only what it means to be a hero, but to be part of a family that bears the weight of the mountain together.
Histoire (IGDB)
The story takes place in a distant land but copes with themes and emotions common to all of us: love and hope, longing and uncertainty, ultimately loss... and sacrifice we are willing to make to save the ones we care the most for.

« Children of Morta is an incredible roguelike title that will keep you hooked for hours on end, offering superb gameplay and presentation, as well as a surprisingly strong story. »
« Children of Morta is pieced together in such a way that no element feels out of place, and the wonderful roguelite gameplay is backed with a deep and emotional story that kept me engrossed until the very end. »
« With procedural worlds, fantastic cooperative combat, and a storyline that makes you care about the entire Bergson family, Children of Morta represents the best example of games as art. There are still a few months to go in 2019, but Children of Morta is looking like my Indie Game of the Year. »
« Children of Morta is a resoundingly impactful, thoughtful, and humanizing rogue-lite with an all-consuming narrative you simply can’t stop chasing. Even with its dark, fantasy filled setting it tells a very grounded story about family, love, and sacrifice in the face of adversity. The voice acting is spot on, the complex pixel-art is gorgeous to pause and behold, and combat feels powerful with everyone in the family. The dungeons are vast enough to compel you to explore without wasting your time on endless corridors, and the game strikes a perfect balance between entry-level rogue-lite and epic RPG that makes it stand tall over your average rogue-lite. We’ve waited a long time for Children of Morta and the wait was more than worth it. »
« Children of Morta is the best roguelike I've played in 2019. A strong story, exciting combat, and great characters make it a must-play for any roguelike fan. »
« Children of Morta is a resoundingly beautiful game that tells a compelling story of growth, forgiveness and love through a set of deep of satisfying rogue-like mechanics that only kept me invested in the gameplay but the journey of The Bergsons throughout my playtime. »
« While Children of Morta‘s surprising flexibility — without too comprising on the challenge of its gameplay — is one to take note of, it’s Dead Mage’s ability to find harmony with so many [figurative] moving parts that’s more impressive. Don’t let the tag or implication of hollowness throw you, Children of Morta — like Dead Cells before it — is an addictive, well-orchestrated and brilliantly-devised take on the roguelike template. »
« Children of Morta is an absolute joy of an experience whether you choose to go alone, or with a friend. »
Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)
« Children of Morta is moving, and there’s no denying that. It has soul, it has intent, and you can tell there is a team behind it with a very clear vision of the story they wanted to tell. The story of the Bergson family, its melancholic tone, and its audiovisual presentation ensure that the journey has emotional weight, something rarely seen within the **** is also a game with its own identity. It doesn't try to blatantly copy other successful roguelites, nor does it get lost in absurdly complex systems. It does its own thing, with a restrained, direct, and very well-presented proposal. Visually and musically, it is memorable, which already places it above many run-of-the-mill titles. However, once you scratch the surface, its limitations appear. As a roguelite, it falls short: the combat never quite takes off, the progression is solid but conservative, and the replayability doesn't reach the level of the genre's heavyweights. It’s not bad at all, but it doesn't justify the pedestal many put it on.Children of Morta isn't the definitive roguelite some claim it to be, nor does it pretend to be. It is an honest, emotive, and well-crafted experience, but also a safe and unadventurous one in terms of gameplay. In the end, it’s a game remembered more for what it conveys than for how it plays. And that might be enough for many… but not for everyone. »
« I enjoyed this game with my boyfriend, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a local co-op (give it some time at the beginning because it takes some time to grow into it). Gameplay could have been a bit more interesting, but overall the story and narration were great and it was a fun short game. »
Tavsiye etmiyorum. »
« It surprised me to see such high ratings for this game. I understand the story and narrative is really well done and it certainly looks alright but that's all in my opinion. The combat and gameplay overall is quite unremarkable, dull level design and sluggish repetitive progression throughout. No way that this game is anywhere near as good, definitely dont deserve more than 80 score, pretty underwhelming game. »
« A great rouge like RPG that handles the themes family, love, sacrifice and struggles. It feels refreshing but has a few bugs / problems. You take control of the Bergson family who are guardians of a holy mountain and travel roads around / through it. A serious threat is spreading named the corruption. More and more land and people were corrupted. Luckily the Bergsons are all capable fighters. Gameplay wise it is a dungeon crawler / rouge like RPG. You travel through random generated dungeons to drive the story forward. The characters level up and gain new abilities or buffs. With the collected money you unlock upgrades. There are of cause collectables and events. The main charm is the Bergson family. You see them evolve, struggle while being a loving and caring family. It is as immersive as enjoyable. The experience here feels unique. There are a few downsides however for the PS 4 version. The game crashed a bit when 2 characters are present which !Slight spoiler warning! will happen in solo play. There are a few glitches and towards the end melee characters are far inferior than ranged characters. To be fair I can also **** at playing them. However it was still a great experience. Graphically they go for old school pixel style. It has a nice art style but did annoy me. The soundtrack was excellent. Wont complain for the presentation as the family stories and overcoming hardships won me over. Overall I would recommend it for the experience and uniqueness. A great hidden gem in the RPG genre. »
« “Children Of Morta” is a game that I enjoyed quite a bit, playing by myself as well as with my **** is quite a unique game, falling in many genres such as Roguelike, Adventure, Hack and slash, RPG and dungeon crawler. It does most of these quite well, creating enemies with unique mechanics to make dungeon exploring interesting, giving the characters many creative abilities to allow for a diverse fighting system and creating a heartfelt story that explored the characters **** the game did not do any of these in a way that was extremely special and well developed. For example, the story was quite a generic story of the “good guys fighting an evil that is spreading across the world and they are the only chance of saving it” with elements of “the main bad guy is evil as his lover went away” and “the evil is called the corruption but not really delved into” sprinkled in as well. I still do like the character building, especially with the small interactions between characters which can be seen when we are looking around their home, developing their own stories as well as the whole family.Despite the tactics that could be formed from all of the abilities given to the characters and the intense fascination that forms in how to best use them, quite a few of the fighting mechanics felt a bit clunky. For most of the game, I used the ranged characters Linda and Lucy who have a much lower chance of being damaged than other characters because of the ferocious nature of the enemies in close combat. It was quite an ingenious idea to make levelling up characters to certain levels also level up the whole family by adding new abilities (e.g. extra dodge), so I also played quite a bit with all of the melee characters, who, after some time, I found to be quite a pleasant challenge to play **** example, Mark is a character who specialises in martial arts like fighting and has great abilities such as jumping large distances to enemies to land a hit and performing a devastating explosion if his dodge is sacrificed for a while. Even though I thought that he would be impossible to play with at the start because of his vulnerability to strong enemies with a large reach, it was quite fun trying to perfect strategies and the speed of my reactions to specific enemies in specific positions with specific abilities being ready to use.Melee characters still had quite big disadvantages which made me switch back to the ranged ones after a while - the complete inability to deal with some types of enemies. No matter how hard I tried, there was no way to use Mark or other characters with extremely short ranges to attack the slime monsters because of their sudden attacks and instant damage on contact (even when they are not attacking). All melee characters also did quite badly with enemies that could not be stunned and had quick and long reaching attacks. Because of the clunky dodging system, it was nearly impossible to dodge some of these attacks with characters such as Joey who needed a long time to stop their current attack. There are also other enemies which were also made quite shoddily. For instance, there is an enemy that places walls and creates tumors from the ground which hurt the player when touched. Even though this could have been a fun enemy to fight, the random wall placement and the sudden nature of the tumors’ arrival made fights with them much more about chance than skill, especially annoying when they placed walls in places which would trap the ****, the fighting system still has a lot to improve on, but at least it is a blast to play and overcome problems given by the game. Co-op was even better - if you want to do it, be prepared to create a constant stream of exclamations to each other when you spot something important or plan what to do next! The boss fights were fairly awkward, with many of the bosses being quite easy to beat by just running around with a ranged character and the other bosses being so difficult that you have to pray for them not to do certain attacks too much. Even in normal mode, the final bossfight was so easy that I barely lost any health.Nevertheless, “Children Of Morta” still is an exhilarating game with many unique fight mechanics. It might be too hard for children, but it is perfect for gamers with quite a bit of experience in top down fighting games.8.4/10 »
