Description (IGDB)

Battle Brothers is a turn based strategy RPG mix which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory? The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.

« Battle Brothers immersed me more than what you would expect from “just” a turn-based tactical RPG. I love its artistic approach, its mechanics to every last bit, and of course its unforgiving difficulty curve. I would not have it any other way. In this reviewer's humble opinion, this is easily the leading candidate for indie game of 2017. »

GameOver.gr 85/100

« Αn unforgiving and difficult to master Turn-based strategy RPG set in a low fantasy universe, that rewards the persistent and patient player. A perpetual battle for survival and the constant need for adapting new gameplay tactics is only held back by the total randomness in many aspects of the game. This randomness is at the same time charming and repulsive. »

Game Debate 85/100

« Combat can often devolve into a straight-line slugfest at times, and at other times terrain can make avenues of approach somewhat unclear and adjacencies a little hard to pinpoint. But for the vast majority of the time, the feeling of leading a desperate crew of die-hard sellswords is captured better in Battle Brothers than in pretty much any other game I've played. A surprise hit. »

PC Gamer 84/100

« Don’t let some clunky inventories scare you off from this excellent strategy RPG. »

Riot Pixels 84/100

« Battle Brothers needs more text to fully bring its world to live, but if you like turn-based battles and open worlds, this game is as good as it gets. »

RPG Fan 82/100

« Battle Brothers knows what it is and doesn't try to be more than it should be, and that makes it so much better than other titles that strive for an epic or storied feel. What's accomplished here is a solid, honest package of thrills and strategic depth, though not oppressively so. In truth, the world can get monotonous and drags at times, but I also found myself losing track of time on several occasions as I told myself, "Just one more job." I dabbled in Veteran a bit before writing this review and couldn't get back into it — I just couldn't find the heart to jump right back in after I had developed such an incredible group of fighters who I got to know by name. One day I will likely pick the banner back up and I may just fall on the battlefield twenty hours in. And that's okay. »

Hooked Gamers 80/100

« Battle Brothers may not be a game that I think about months from now, but in the moment I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. It's a break from the fast paced games constantly bombarding me. If that sounds like something that would be up your alley, then don’t hesitate and start building up a mercenary band for an adventure to call your own. »

« An addictive turn-based strategy lets you manage a group of mercenaries. Occasionally it is hard and demanding, but it is a nice and unusual game for the fans of the genre. »

« oh guys, its a little bit hard, but I lovethis game. Will be waiting for the second cgapter of this really great game. »

« Fantastic game that gives those Darkest Dungeon vibes. You must choose wisely when developing your warriors, choosing the right skills and equipment to complement your men's attributes. Combat is tactical, like chess you maneuver yourself into the best available position and choose the best form of attack. Analyze the enemy formation, exploiting any enemy weak points. Use the right weapons for the job. Buy what you can with your limited resources, and accept that not all will survive. Yes it's tough, but that's part of the fun. You make the best of a bad situation. With some strategy and a little luck some may even survive long enough to retire after a grueling campaign. Highly recommend getting all the expansions with it, don't miss out on those extra additions to the already great base game. »

« Interesting concept, but I just can't recommend this game, I think it's very unbalanced and absurd for the most part. Even on the so-called easy difficulty this game is almost unplayable. If you want a good and interesting game, to play after work or whatever, this is definitely not it, it seems more like a personal project of a developer who one day thought 'Let's make an impossible game in which no one will win'. Much more frustrating than fun. I like challenges in games, I don't like easy games, I also like learning about games, but much of the content and challenges in Battle Brothers are just absurd. Not to mention totally unbalanced Snakes, Lindwurms, Alps and other things. Just not fun. I like an idea of a mercenary company, combat and weapons are nice, but enemy difficulty is often totally unbalanced. »

« Frustrating, unbalanced game that doesn't allow to player to even to start the game normally, from day 1 you are basically fighting 5x better equipped enemies with special powers, like nomads, brigands, animals or whatever. You take quests like caravan or deliver cargo and you often spend more on wages, food and medicine then what is your reward. Every single small mistake, ever 1 wrong click, can result in total gameplay collapse where you lose men and then game over. You will never recover. There is no freedom or room for any mistakes. So much about gameplay. And hit chances are weird, I would say even broken, you will very often miss with 70 or 80% hit chance, while enemies rarely miss. Also spear wall by 1 nomad he hit attacker like 50 times, while my spear wall breaks immediately.. In this game 1 nomad with spear can defeat the whole army of Alexander the Great. Later in the game you come across literally impossible camps and fights, 29 goblins that never miss, spam magic roots, 24 orc warriors, etc. Frustrating and unplayable from the very start. »

« Absolute waste of time. You would have more fun licking trash that just came fresh out of the sewer. Waste of money, time, & effort because you're just going to lose anyway. Even on "easy" settings. Do yourself a favor & eat a pile of **** before buying this game, you'll feel better about yourself rather than waste your life on this heaping pile of flaming turds. »

« I learnt about this game during the Christmas of 2021, my good friend Guillaume indistinctively played the game in a small house in the center of rural France. I curiously approached him and like a kid being offered the purest Colombian cocaine… I got hooked. During those days with him, everything felt incredible, the mechanics, the map, the scenarios and the storylines, the character development and the feeling of becoming the leader of an unbeatable mercenary company was just ecstatic. It was simply perfect. But everything comes with a price, and this experience was no different. What was the price you might ask? 200h wasted without enjoying the time with my friends? Yes. Burning the motherboard of my laptop? Of course. A hypertrophic cardiopathy derived of chronic cocaine use? Surely. But most importantly, this game took my soul. What started with a great experience became a poisonous relationship of addiction. At some point I even stopped enjoying it!!! I just felt that I had to get all the achievements, and the downfall began, every fight became a torture, each failed roll of dice a fountain of tears, I just hoped for the next random event to not become a metaphorical knife digging deeper in my chest. The game nourished by your soul keeps a perfect balance between randomness and player-oriented strategy, the micromanagement of the soldiers it is not tedious, and some mechanics like the food poorly implemented in most games here are just a minor inconvenience that increases immersion. The countless scenarios, origins for the company, and styles of play make this game highly replayable. Your decisions during the game dictate the ending, and how successful your company will end up. Do you want to retire from your own company early and live a peaceful life? Do you want to fight till the end and retire as part of a legendary army? Or you will die trying? Even the idea of being a lonely wolf it is contemplated and comes with strong and weak points; fascinating. It is as hard as you want it to be, and it feels rewarding in both ways, either by creating an overpowered company that razes wherever it steps, or by achieving to scape with barely your life as the last man standing, with hopes to rebuild your army. This game it is essentially perfect and equally noxious for your mental health, so…Do I recommend it? Abso-fuc*ing-lutely »

« I have considered purchasing this game for a very long time. I kept reading about the difficulty which made me a little concerned. As a huge fan of XCOM, this was nowhere near as intimidating as the other comments made it out to be. Its more challenging, but its in the same ballpark. The depth of the game is very satisfying, there are a lot of different mechanics in play that take a lot of playtime to fully understand. This is a game with a steep learning curve, and unfortunately very little of it is overtly spelled out. It takes a lot of trial and error and self learning to understand. Its not completely overwhelming beyond the first hour or two, but you just learn the rest of it naturally the more you play. The mechanics seem to be so deep that no matter how much you play, you're always learning details. This is not a game where its impossible to enjoy without spending hours of research, which is what I feared. The overarching resource management is also a lot of fun. Its just a blank canvas **** where every run will be completely different, and I think that really adds to the replayability. Its fun managing all of the different brothers while under resource constraints. I think the most exciting part of the game is the challenge - just do yourself a favor and start with at least medium difficulty and iron man mode. I cannot imagine this game being nearly as fun without having the pressure of failure at your heels at all times. I failed a lot at first, but I found myself hitting momentums at various times by trying out new things and learning the game little by little. Losing your best characters and losing your company is part of the game, if you take that out, then you are not doing it right. Its very similar to XCOM in that aspect. The weakest areas of the game are the presentation, but I respect it because its definitely not a focus of the game. The graphics are really bad, and not even in the charming indie game way. The characters are all just busts similar to chess pieces. Luckily they add some backstory to the characters you make you feel more invested. The music and sound are equally as bad and unambitious, but again, that is not the point of the game at all. After my first 5 hours with the game I realized that I will probably spend some time with it. I immediately purchased the DLC and did not regret it. Now I'm around 25 hours in, and plenty of time left to enjoy it. Fantastic game and it really succeeds at what it sets out to do. »
