Etrian Odyssey II HD est un jeu d'aventure et de rôle (RPG) développé par Atlus et publié par Sega, sorti le 1er juin 2023. Ce titre est une ressortie remastérisée de l'opus original, avec des graphismes et une bande-son remasterisés, ainsi que des améliorations de qualité de vie telles que plusieurs modes de difficulté et de nombreux emplacements de sauvegarde.
L'histoire se déroule dans un monde où la civilisation a été engloutie par les sept mers, ne laissant qu'une forteresse flottante. Les joueurs doivent constituer leur propre groupe d'exploration parmi douze classes de héros pour grimper l'arbre Yggdrasil et atteindre les nuages, afin de découvrir la vérité derrière le Grand-Duché du Haut-Lagaard. Le jeu propose des fonctionnalités comme un codex monstrueux, un journal de quête et un arbre de compétences facilitant l'optimisation du groupe.
L'accueil critique et public est contrasté. La presse a décrit le jeu comme « sadique et merveilleux », tandis que les joueurs expriment des avis partagés : certains le considèrent comme l'un des meilleurs RPG sur DS, soulignant son défi et ses graphismes impressionnants pour l'époque, tandis que d'autres, tout en laissant un avis positif, estiment qu'il s'agit du moins bon opus de la série. Un joueur note des améliorations significatives par rapport au premier jeu, notamment concernant la retraite des personnages.
Techniquement, Etrian Odyssey II HD utilise le moteur Unity et emploie Steam et Denuvo comme DRM. Il est disponible sur PC et Nintendo Switch. « One of the best RPG'S in the DS without a doubt, plenty of fun even when the game can be hard and very challenging sometimes, the graphics are insane for a DS 2008 game, good character design, gorgeous music, as well a fun combat and costumization system, Atlus really make a great JRPG as always ... isn't very ambitious but is a worth RPG to play i highly recomended for those also looking for a hard challenging game . »
« An absolute beauty ****... This is hardcore RPG dungeon crawling at its best! Also, a BIG improvement on the original! Only possible let down (not a big one, though) is that in this installment the F.O.E.s (not the big bosses, but the mini-bosses) don't give your characters any experience points, so there is no motivation to kill more than a couple of each kind to get the special item drops... Also, I did like the character art better on the first one, especially the non-playable character portraits. But, overall, it is better than the original! Warning: this type of games are an acquired taste... Platformer and FPS gamers need not apply! (Unless you want to try something REALLY different.) »
