La presse a salué son esthétique, comme le soulignaient Gameblog (« Heady for the eyes and ears ») ou Everyeye_it (« Wonderful panoramas painted in pixels »), tandis que Meristation l'a qualifié d'« exceptional game in each and every one of its sections, a near-masterpiece ».

« Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game that somehow never gets tired. It has a labyrinthine plot that bravely attempts to give eight characters the same scope and development as eight sole protagonists would get in lesser games. It’s also a game that bravely makes the story all about those characters, with the world, harsh as it can be, almost secondary to the insular unit and their individual arcs. That sheer ambition is all the more impressive because Octopath Traveller uses sprites. Little 2D characters made up of even littler squares. People need to play this game if only to realise that not everything spectacular needs to be photo-real. »

Meristation 95/100

« An exceptional game in each and every one of its sections, a near-masterpiece. »

Nintenderos 95/100

« Among all the virtues outlined in this review, three of them must be emphasized: you can discover a fantasy world better than ever with the ramification of stories, the strategic combat system and the beautiful artistic style, which create a really innovative, unique and highly recommended game. »

Areajugones 93/100

« There are many reasons to consider Octopath Traveler as one of the best games available for Nintendo Switch. An interesting story put together with several charismatic characters. A deep and addictive battle system as well as both excellent visuals and audio working together to create one the best releases of the year. »

IGN 93/100

« Octopath Traveler is a JRPG dream come true. Both its battle system and aesthetic pay loving tribute to the Super NES era while moving the formula forward in exciting and novel ways. This isn’t merely a modern retread of past classics, but a phenomenal homage with genuinely fresh ideas in a fantastically charming wrapper of old-school meets new. While the eight different character stories could’ve used a little more connection between them, I’m looking forward to going back to complete them all, explore the many side areas, battle optional bosses, and unlock the final job classes. »

« If you have a Switch and like JRPGs, then Octopath Traveler is a game you cannot miss. This is the next gen classic RPG we have been waiting for, a fusion of retro, indie, and modern design that could only be played now, and could only be appreciated because of the games that came before it. »

IGN Spain 91/100

« Long, deep, and with a combat system tailored to perfection. Octopath Traveler is an almost perfect ode to the old school RPGs. »

Atomix 91/100

« A spectacular tribute to the 16 bit-RPG classics. Also, Octopath Traveler has its own ideas, with a spectacular combat system, great storytelling and graphics that will melt your heart. »

« Almost every aspect of this game was well put together. The story, art style, characters, battle system, exploration and music are all top tier. The soundtrack is absolutely outstanding with many songs that I would find myself listening to even when not playing the game. There were several times where I had to spend a few hours grinding to bring my party's strength up in order to proceed or beat a boss. The game took me about 80 hours to finish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although probably 15 of those 80 hours were spent grinding, it was still well worth it. The environments were very pleasing and the battles were actually fun and turn-based. »

« The soundtrack on this game is nothing short of a masterpiece, which has me coming back to it long after I finished the game. The game itself has an above average story, with a fresh take on the 8 characters thing. Combat and mechanics wise it doesn’t innovate much, becoming repetitive at times. Boss fights are unnecessarily long, and specially frustrating when you inevitably fail them, having to learn about the bosses weaknesses and patterns. »

Pokemigas 7/10

« I originally abandoned this game after finishing every charater's chapter 2 due to the repetitive nature of the gameplay loop but I decided to pick it back up and I am glad I did. Not every story is great and some do not stick the landing properly, but the ones that do are great. Couple this with an amazing battle system and art style, along with one of the best soundtracks of all time, and you've got a really good (yet flawed) game. My main complaint and what made me lower the score by a point is the (actual) final boss. The way the stories were loosely interconnected is fine with me, but the final boss should be just that: a final boss. Instead, it's a superboss, that requires VERY careful planning and/or an excruciating grind. I did not bother trying to defeat it for those reasons, nor do I recommend anyone do it. It is a blemish on an otherwise interesting finale. »

« Too much “friendship power” and childish tasks for my taste. The way the story is told was boring and having to watch the characters spin every single time you do a special action with an NPC, wasting my time, I could not bear it. Also, it is waaaay too easy, battle wise. Could not bear to finish. »

« What kind of difficulty scaling does this game has? I stuck at Ophelia first boss. I stunkluck the guy until my party runs out of mana. And it summons some stones that explodes in 3 turns and that 3 turns is not enough to stunluck those stones. I watched a video if you choose Ophelia at the beginning of the game, the fight is easy. But if you go there with full party, now the game is over, it is impossible to beat the guy because of the stupid difficulty scaling. F.... you »

chinottogothic 5/10

« This game is simply disappointing. One of the pillars of JRPGs is the plot; however, there are so many plot holes in this game that it can make you lose interest in playing it. "Innovate and preserve tradition." In reality, they only left what had aged badly in classic JRPGs. And I could go on forever. I recommend considering other 2D HD games. »
