Description (IGDB)

Move like a shadow. Strike like a snake. After amassing an army of ninjas and lords of darkness, the mysterious Tenrai has begun a quest to conquer 16th-century Japan. Now your master, Lord Gohda, has called upon you - a cunning stealth assassin - to stop Tenrai and his disciples before all is lost. Live by honor. Kill by stealth.

Histoire (IGDB)

After Lord Mei-Oh was defeated in Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, Rikimaru was left in Lord Mei-Oh's fortress carrying a giant boulder to provide an escape route for Ayame and Princess Kiku. He appears to be trapped and left for dead. Ayame stuck Rikimaru's sword, "Izayoi" (he is seen drawing this sword in the opening CG of Wrath of Heaven) in snow as a monument for her fellow ninja, now considered dead. A year later, Rikimaru reports to Lord Gohda that he has managed to survive this near-death experience; unbeknownst to them, the real Rikimaru is trapped in the 20th century trying to find a way back to their time. The game's plot plays differently depending on the character chosen, but connects at certain points. The story revolves mainly around Rikimaru's return and the struggle for the Three Jewels, which are said to give power to those who possess them. These are the Jewels of Heaven, Earth, and Virtue. Tenrai, an evil wizard who wants to get his hands on them, commands a band of his men to take the Jewels from whoever possesses them. However, upon encountering Rikimaru, he seems interested in his power and attempts convincing him to join his men. Rikimaru refuses, and he and Ayame face each one of them. One of the men in Tenrai's arsenal is Onikage, who only serves him to pursue his plan of reviving Mei-Oh (his former master) and Tatsumaru (the former leader of the Azuma Ninja Clan whom Tenrai revived). Rikimaru and Ayame follow Tenrai into his fortress to stop him from destroying the world using the power gained from two of the Jewels. If he can be defeated, peace will be returned to Gohda's land.

« The best stealth game and ninja game on the market today. This is my choice for 2003's Game Of The Year. [Grade = A+] »

Maxim Online 100/100

« If you’re the kind of guy who likes to chop his prey into Sizzlean before he gets a whiff of your bad man musk, then the ninjas of Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven are right up your dojo. »

TotalGames.net 93/100

« The perfect example of how to update a classic game without losing the spark of sheer enjoyment that made it great in the first place. This is the first must-buy game of 2003. »

Absolute Playstation 91/100

« A real beauty in gameplay, graphics and sound. I cannot imagine any Tenchu fan out there not being overjoyed with the overall experience this game has to offer. »

Game Informer 90/100

« The ninja game the world has been waiting for. It fights with honor, but still handily slays the competition. [Apr 2003, p.80] »

Game Chronicles 90/100

« Spectacular kill sequences, a cool plot, cooler weapons and great levels all contribute to make this game the best of the Tenchu series, and one of the best first-person stealth games on the market. »

Gamer.tv 88/100

« The main thrust of the gameplay is thoroughly mesmerizing, and there's a bundle of replay value here too. Despite glitches, Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven is ace. »

GameZone 86/100

« Perhaps the most puzzling thing of all is what happens when an enemy gets really, really confused. Most commonly you'll see them walk into a wall or some other barrier. »

« This game has some of the worst camera controls ever. In the first level, when you ascend onto the very first wall right next to you, the camera is already pointing way too high up. You have to wrangle it almost every single time if you ever want to see where you're going. They didn't playtest it at all or just didn't care to. Tenchu Z, Shinobido, and even Red Ninja don't have this problem. Save your time and play those instead. »

KAARKHAN 10/10

« awesome game one of the best techu games of all a good connection with the precuels and a great combat system even has multiplayer for the first time »

« "Wrath of Heaven" is a good ninja stealth game. Unfortunately, the enemy AI is pretty weak. As a result, "Wrath" isn't as challenging as it should be, but it's still terrific fun. You can play through the story with three playable characters. And you can play co-op missions or competitive game modes in split-screen. Fans of "Manhunt" and "Splinter Cell" should enjoy this. I would rate this third "Tenchu" game with an 8.2 out of 10. »

« I generally don't understand the criticism towards Fatal Shadows, because when I played both Tenchu WOH and FS, I felt completely the opposite.I played the US version of this game and for some reason, it doesn't have the option to restart a mission in the pause menu while playing any mission.More over than that, the amount of times I tried using the grappling hook only to not grab the ledge for the stupidest reason was enough to set my rage to over 9000.Another critic I have for this game (but also for Fatal Shadow) is the spider ****'s so useless that I honestly don't know why they made it so **** one more thing I have to mention are the enemy placements and enemy's sense of vision.Playing the cave level on first playthrough was a nightmare.Enemies have a good vision and their so far away, so how the **** am I suppose to stealth kill them? Not to mention the useless of the spider wall ability and the grappling hook's inconsistency to work properly.I tried playing a little bit more with Ayame, and then I just gave up, since she doesn't offer much difference from Rikimaru.Funny enough, her play style in Fatal Shadows is quite expressive and shows her speed and agility. This is quite constrant to Rin from Fatal Shadows who plays a little slower then Ayame but exceeds in other aspects.Overall, I hated this game.I would have given it more change like Fatal Shadows if the bugs weren't ****-WHY-IS-THERE-NO-OPTION-TO-RESET-MISSION-ON-PAUSE-MENU !!!!P.S.I forgot to mention that this game (and Sadly even Fatal Shadows) has one of the worst camera controls I have ever **** can barely control the camera properly and the default controls sure don't make up for it when you try to use a quick grappling hook to espace before getting spotted for when you just tryin to know who's behind a ****'s especially annoying when you crouch and stand on the edge of any high **** game's camera assumes you want to look down always while in that **** you wanna look watches a head, you have to hold the right analog stick down to direct the camera **** all honestly, now that I am thinking about it, AC1 actually address this issue with a camera that is free to **** to mention that the game let's you get consistent wall climbing and Air Assassinations.Okay, I am done **** on this game XD »

« Everything I ever wanted from a ninja game and a masterpiece for the time period »

« "Wrath of Heaven" is a stealth game that holds its own against "Hitman", "Manhunt" and "Splinter Cell". It includes three different campaigns, co-op missions and competitive modes. I never played the first two, so I can't compare "Wrath" to its predecessors. But I can say it is a highly enjoyable ninja "simulator". At the end of each mission, you're given a rating depending on your stealth performance. If you manage to blow your cover, you can still finish levels with combat, but your grade will be affected. Despite weak enemy AI, the game is a real blast to play through. I would give it an 8.2 out of 10. »

VLG 8/10

« I always liked Tenchu, and played all of them with my friends (that were way better than me at these kind of games). Good old times. »
