Oninaki
Oninaki

« Tokyo RPG Factory's Oninaki is a return to form for the relatively new studio, channeling the best parts of I Am Setsuna with some fresh JRPG form. »
« Oninaki tackles the theme of death brilliantly thanks to some poignant scenes and a willingness to go where most games won’t. That thorough exploration of death ties into every aspect of the game from its hack and slash gameplay to the ending choice that will leave players reflecting upon the journey they just went on. It isn’t often that a game truly succeeds as art, but every part of Oninaki goes back into its core motif and that’s why it is an essential action RPG. »
« Tokyo RPG Factory's Oninaki is the studio's most ambitious project yet with characters and themes that are as fascinating as they are tragic. »
« No question, ONINAKI has reignited my long extinguished JRPG spark. I’ve actually been looking forward to booting up my PS4 every day to follow Kagachi and Linne’s journey. It’s not a slam dunk game; there is a lot of predictability in the storyline, but even then, I’m compelled to see this through to the very end. There are Daemons I absolutely do not enjoy having in my party but will eventually grind out simply to view all of their lore and max out skill trees. All in pursuit of that feeling of accomplishment for hitting the one hundred percent completion mark, or perhaps in this case, my next Platinum trophy. »
« Oninaki takes dark themes and a child-like visual style and combines them with the potent themes of life and death wonderfully. Combat can be a little restrictive and the presentation takes a hit in cutscenes, but its successes make it more than worth your while. The game flows with darkness and hope, and Oninaki shines because of it. »
« Oninaki is a solid-action JRPG that experiments lightly with the foundations of the genre creating a world with personality and appeal. The game does not disappoint by mixing tradition with novelty. »
« It’s story and lore have plenty to love about them, and when paired with the depth of the combat system, it makes for an engaging and entertaining experience fans of JRPGs will at least want to take a look at. »
« Oninaki is not the best Tokyo RPG could do, but it's not a step down either. Many new and exciting ideas are there, but it seems that the developers couldn't execute all of them as they should. Oninaki is a decent title, but could have been even better if the developers managed to reach their full potential. »

« This game is so boring to the point where if I was told that this was the product of an effort to create the most boring game imaginable I would had believed it without a second thought. Is beyond description to an extend where if somebody doesn't play this game for a good amount of time,it's hard to comprehend just how boring it is. »
« Its ok, I checked out after the first half of the story. it kept goin on and on until I was finally able to finish it in the end »
« Oninaki is an "ok" game, that doesn't offer a lot in terms of gameplay and progress. The story is what makes this game an adventure to live if you are willing to ignore many and many things that just don't work well (you'll notice them soon). Square Enix should work more on offering quality games, which is possible even with a limited budget, because there were good ideas that were just put together without doing a quality control of the product. »
« I don't understand the hate for this game, clearly the finer points escape the casuals of the gamingscape which sadly, are severely dumbed down to what they used to be. Oninaki is an underrated gem, having a mature themed story dealing with adult topics such as suicide and death. Combat is a simple one or two button affair but the real depth comes from the weapons you can upgrade and how you choose to utilise spirits, the abilities they can learn, and your own timing if you just try and button mash without thinking about some kind of strategy at least they you're not likely to get very far. Graphically Oninaki is almost identical on Switch compared to PS4 and PC with the PS4 only having a slight resolution and shadow advantage and of course PC essentially the sky being the limit in terms of resolution. Locations are also quite varied and relatively interesting but enemy variety could be a little better. The only real frustrating things with Oninaki is that there is no New Game+ option which given the general leveling system of spirits particularly, to a lesser extent how weapons are upgraded and transmuting makes NG+ a sorely missed option as well as a golden opportunity - there is definitely enough here for a second playthrough if there were a NG+ option. Instead you'll have to do it all in one to experience everything. »
« Bad gameplay and bad plot. The only good thing it is the graphics, that is quite unique. »
« Giving this a 10/10 because it definitely doesn't deserve an overall 5.5/10. It has a really good story once you get to the end of it. I just finished it myself and got all the endings. The gameplay is fun although clunky, and the switch between both worlds makes this mechanic a more interesting take on this indie jrpg. It's a small studio within SE and sadly their last RPG, and the concept of death told in this story is intriguing. The final boss is somewhat disappointing. I'd maybe give this a 7 or 8 out of 10. But as I said 5.5 is way too low for user score and I feel like people only tried a little bit of this game and gave up on it so easily before giving it a fair score. »
« LOVE Tokyo RPG Factory and his newest piece Oninaki. The story is lovely and PERFECT, with an amount of interesting characters. Love the amazing soundtrack. This is not a turn based rpg, maybe hack n' slash with some rpg details. I don't know why reviews doesn't like this game. I recommended SO MUCH!! »
« I really enjoyed my time with this little JRPG. So much so that I kind of wish they would have been more ambitious with it and turned it into a full-fledged AAA release because the story and the world here definitely deserves so. What we got, however, is a humble retro throwback that is great fun and memorable on its own and, because of it, I still fully recommend it to fans of classic JRPGs. »
