Hitman: Absolution, développé par IO Interactive et publié par Square Enix, est sorti le 19 novembre 2012 sur Windows, PlayStation 3 et Xbox 360. Cinquième volet de la série Hitman et suite de Hitman: Blood Money, ce jeu d'action infiltration au moteur Glacier 2 met en scène l'Agent 47 trahi par l'Agence et traqué par la police, poursuivant un contrat personnel dans un monde corrompu à la recherche de vérité et de rédemption. Avant sa sortie, les développeurs avaient indiqué vouloir rendre le titre plus accessible tout en conservant les aspects exigeants de la franchise. Le jeu propose notamment un mode Instinct permettant de prédire les mouvements ennemis, ainsi que des mécaniques de déguisement. Une édition Elite pour macOS, incluant les contenus téléchargeables, a été publiée par Feral Interactive le 15 mai 2014, et des versions améliorées ont rejoint la Hitman HD Enhanced Collection sur PlayStation 4 et Xbox One en janvier 2019. La presse a salué l'ensemble, comme en témoignent les éloges de G4 TV qualifiant le jeu de triomphe et ceux de X-ONE Magazine UK évoquant une étude d'excellence pure, tandis que certains joueurs sur Metacritic ou Steam relatent des expériences positives bien que ponctuelles, sans que ces avis ne constituent des faits sur le jeu lui-même.

« This was my first Hitman game ever. I heard a lot of complaints from longtime Hitman fans, maybe I just have a biased since it’s my first. But, I thought the story was fun, it’s definitely insane and over the top but I enjoy that. It gives you the option to play however you want, guns blazing.. or nobody heard a sound. It can be pretty dang hard trying to do it suit only on hard+ difficulty as I am not good at stealth games. If you’re good at them maybe it’s not too hard for you though. The music was awesome and I absolutely loved the settings and going through each mission differently. »
