Sorti le 11 mars 2016, Hitman est un jeu de tir, d'aventure et de tactique développé par IO Interactive et édité par Square Enix ainsi que par le studio lui-même. Sixième volet principal de la franchise, il inaugure la trilogie World of Assassination et utilise le moteur Glacier 2. Le joueur incarne l'assassin génétiquement modifié Agent 47 dans une perspective à la troisième personne et exécute des contrats dans de grands niveaux sandbox ouverts situés à Paris, en Italie, au Maroc, à Bangkok, au Colorado et au Japon, chaque niveau autorisant diverses approches comme les déguisements, la manipulation de l'environnement, les accidents provoqués ou la confrontation directe. Un système sans classe permet de débloquer outils, points de départ et équipement via des défis. Publié à l'origine par épisodes, le titre a été retiré de la vente autonome en 2023 lorsque IO Interactive a regroupé la trilogie sous Hitman: World of Assassination. L'histoire débute en 1999 avec le recrutement de 47 à l'International Contract Agency, puis, vingt ans plus tard, ses assassinats sont secrètement orchestrés par le Shadow Client contre Providence, une organisation occulte. Disponible sur PC, PlayStation 4, Mac, Xbox One, Linux et Google Stadia, le jeu affiche une note agrégée de 79,40. La presse a salué sa qualité, le Guardian jugeant qu'il s'agit du meilleur opus de la série et possiblement d'un des meilleurs jeux d'infiltration jamais réalisés, tandis que Digital Spy a loué la détermination du studio. Certains joueurs regrettent en revanche l'abandon de la communauté francophone sur le doublage et critiquent la taille des cartes ou la qualité des graphismes.

« It is incredibly frustrating to see a major studio abandon its French-speaking community. Older Hitman titles had full, high-quality French dubbing, but IO Interactive decided to cut corners for the newer releases. This is a terrible business decision. I will not support a developer that ignores its international player base. No French audio means no purchase from me. »

« Originally released in an episodic format and requiring an online connection, "Hitman" had a rough start. But after it was released in its finished form, the game ended up being one of the best entries. No longer available digitally, it plays more like "Blood Money" than "Absolution". The real stars of the show are the huge levels. They're visually beautiful and packed with details and activities. Replay value is strong due to numerous in-game challenges and several ways to make your kill. Fans of the series will love this entry. I would rate it with an 8.5 out of 10. »

I still plan to play it, but I feel that jumping in right now might lead to burnout, especially since I don’t have much free time.I also need to explore the side contracts and expansions, but there’s so much content, and they reuse the same maps — which, by the way, are fewer than in Hitman Absolution. »
