Gears 5, développé par The Coalition et publié par Xbox Game Studios, est sorti le 9 septembre 2019 sur Windows, Xbox One et Xbox Series X|S. Cinquième opus principal de la série Gears of War et suite de Gears of War 4, ce jeu de tir à la troisième personne mêlant aventure suit Kait Diaz dans sa quête pour découvrir l'origine de la Locust Horde. Alors que le Swarm a corrompu l'armée de robots de la Coalition et menace les cités humaines, Kait s'éloigne pour comprendre son lien avec l'ennemi et réalise que la véritable menace pour Sera est elle-même. Le titre propose cinq modes, dont une campagne jouable en coopération à trois, ainsi que des options d'accessibilité poussées.
L'accueil critique a été majoritairement favorable, le site God is a Geek saluant un retour triomphal de la série et SomosXbox jugeant Gears 5 comme le meilleur opus de la franchise avec des modes également soignés. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic expriment en revanche une opposition vive, allant jusqu'à qualifier le jeu de « disgrace » pour la série, tandis que d'autres mettent en avant son évolution ambitieuse et son récit plus profond. Sur Steam, des avis positifs évoquent une expérience divertissante d'environ quinze heures et un multijoueur amusant. Le jeu affiche un score Metacritic de 82 et un score OpenCritic de 85.

« I loved it, It was my first Gear.Even if the story is linear and simple I think it's very enjoyable. The characters are really good, you can grow fond of them, even if the plot is not that long. I finished it and it doesn't happen really often with me. Maybe it isn't perfect, but I think that what remains is your personal gameplay, if you had fun, if you even got affectionate with the protagonists... well then it's a good game. »

« "Gears 5" plays like an open-world "Gears of War 4". The gameplay is fun, the story is good and the graphics are solid. But the lack of innovation is disappointing. Very little has changed since the series debuted in 2006. In addition to the Story, this sequel includes online competitive multiplayer, Horde mode and Escape which is a series of co-op missions. Overall, "Gears 5" is a satisfying action game. But it should've pushed the series forward with newer ideas and mechanics. I'd rate it with an 8.2 out of 10. »
