En incarnant Edith Finch, le joueur explore la demeure familiale pour découvrir l’histoire des Finch et comprendre pourquoi elle est le dernier membre vivant de cette lignée. Chaque récit permet de vivre la dernière journée d’un membre de la famille, à des époques allant du début du XXe siècle à nos jours, toutes ces séquences se jouant en vue subjective et se terminant par la mort du personnage incarné, avec des styles de jeu et des tonalités variés. L’accueil critique a été très favorable, avec un score de 89 sur Metacritic et OpenCritic et une note agrégée de 88,06. The Guardian a salué un jeu parvenant à recréer le plaisir enfantin de se plonger dans un livre, tandis que Push Square a estimé que Giant Sparrow dépassait les attentes avec un récit touchant sur une famille tragiquement malchanceuse. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont décrit une maison semblable à une boîte à jouets pleine de personnalité, ou encore une expérience magnifique et relaxante, et des avis positifs sur Steam ont qualifié le titre d’expérience narrative magique et singulière, tout en notant sa courte durée et l’absence de choix.

« Loved this game it is short and a bit sad but I loved all of it. You get to see parts of people's lives and it shows a lot of grief but it's not an overwhelming amount this is one of my favorite games that I have 100% »
