Post Arcade (National Post) 100/100

« Nothing is so simply put in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but to put it simply, this game is absolutely worth the $20 price tag. It’s not long (about four hours), nor is it particularly challenging, but through and through, this is a beautiful game of strange, twisted, and sometimes sick puzzles. »

GRYOnline.pl 90/100

« The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has a hauntingly beautiful, unnerving world, and when you leave it, it's like waking up from a very complex dream. The game is extremely pretty and demands some interpretation and asking of the right questions. The Astronauts' first game has many little details, and none of them are accidental. Everything is well thought out and the gameplay walks hand in hand with the story. There should be more games like this. »

GameSpot 90/100

« A stirring tale that walks a fine line between the human and the supernatural. As the layers begin to peel back, what you'll find is a story told with a level of cleverness and elegance rarely seen in games. It confirms the feeling you had from the first breathtaking view; when you enter into Red Creek Valley, you're in for something special. »

Eurogamer 90/100

« The Vanishing of Ethan Carter leaves you with several amazing memories; moments that you will want to talk to your friends about for hours and will take great pains not to spoil for other people. The fact it packs those so painlessly into a three-hour game while other developers create empty works that take ten times as long to complete speaks volumes. »

Gameplanet 90/100

« The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a compelling interactive novella that draws players in with its beautifully atmospheric setting. The slow burn narrative doesn’t quite land the final emotional punch it’s aiming for, but it more than satisfies on every other level. »

Joystiq 90/100

« A singular experience, at times strange, astonishing and even bewildering, but always captivating. The mystery will keep you going, but what the game does best is surprise. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has a great story to tell, even if it's not the one you were expecting. »

Softpedia 90/100

« If you’re the kind of person that enjoys story and an immersive experience over gameplay mechanics and action, you’ll surely have a blast with this game, in spite of its largely straightforward puzzles, empty world and some other issues that prevent it from being a true masterpiece. »

Gamereactor Sweden 90/100

« Subtle, atmospheric, beautiful, exiting. A fantastic thriller. »

« The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was a cool experience, the story and narration were solid even though it felt short but i think it fits with what the game has to offer. i really liked the breathtaking sceneries and the beautiful soundtrack. although, the game fell short in terms of being a 100% polished, ready to drop type of thing. the voice acting at times and character movement at other times, and it feels like they get you out of being fully focused on the game and trying to understand the story. i see the vision that the developers possibly had in mind and what they were trying to achieve, and i feel like if the game was developed and worked on by a more experienced and well-funded team, it could've been a much better experience that's for sure. »

« Beautiful graphics but what a bore fest to play. Absolutely do not recommend. »

DivineFaith 3/10

« The game was unfortunately a bit disappointing. The story was relatively boring. The gameplay was okay, but it wasn't really explained, and if you miss something at the beginning of the game, you have to go all the way back to retrieve it in order to even finish the game! The graphics, even after more than 10 years, still look really good and are quite impressive. All in all, it felt more like a walking simulator. »

« Cant help but compare it to edith finch which i played just before, just wasnt as intresting as that imo »

« The graphics are absolutely stunningly beautiful highlighting an absolutely stunningly beautiful storytelling in a small package that will make for an unforgettable evening »

« I hate that I have to give this game this rating, because I think it could've done better... if only the game hadn't made it SO difficult to get through it. At the beginning of the game, they say they aren't going to "hold your hand." Well, there's a chasm between a game that says everything you have to do, and one that literally says nothing. It's doubly unfortunate because I recently got done playing The Forgotten City and that game is INCREDIBLE. And this game is so so similar to it in it's design. And one thing they did was allow for clues to naturally arise from dialogue. But there was none of that here. It drove me to the point of needing a walkthrough for the entire game. And I knew it had potential when I still enjoyed playing it with the walkthrough right there available for me, so to anyone making a game like this, please don't make it so barebones. Add a bit, doesn't have to be much. All that aside, the story is truly beautiful and how it ends provides a satisfying conclusion to the story. The graphics were beautiful. The dynamics of the game were also interesting (once I had the walkthrough) like creating scenes and that sort of stuff. »

« That's a gorgeous game with a nice narrative, but I came to realize that "walking simulatores" are not my thing. That being said, it seems like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a pretty good title for the genre. »
