Polygon 100/100

« Gone Home proves that a game focused on story and exploration, starring a decidedly non-traditional cast of characters can be utterly thrilling. With excellent writing and environments that made me want to explore every nook and cranny, Gone Home simply, effectively drew me in. »

Giant Bomb 100/100

« It’s epic, personal and revelatory to the people involved, and that’s why it’s so special. The moments in my life that I cherish the most--my first love, realizing my brother was my best friend, moving to San Francisco, getting married--would not register against saving the universe from an alien threat, but these are the epic moments in my life. Gone Home grounds itself by reveling in life’s quiet, defining moments, the ones you might write down in a diary, underneath a set of books, only to find years later. »

GamesRadar+ 100/100

« Despite being a very short experience, the mundane acts of walking through hallways, opening doors, or reading pieces of paper become a poignant adventure dealing with personal issues that are handled brilliantly and provide a strong basis for a great game. For that, Gone Home is as much an introspective journey into human life as it is a game so very worthy of your time. »

Post Arcade (National Post) 100/100

« An experience that is so startlingly, unexpectedly and enjoyably different than anything else on the market right now. »

Quarter to Three 100/100

« Gone Home achieves an unexpected and effective range of emotions. Although it’s a mostly sad eerie poignant story, it has flashes of anger and frustration, and the way it manages to fold music into these emotions, as well as the choice of music, is every bit as good as what Bioshock Infinite did with its music. »

DarkStation 100/100

« Gone Home tells a story unlike any other game in recent memory, and yet it does so in a way that only a video game can. The masterfully executed environmental storytelling guarantees that each player will walk away from Gone Home with a different experience. »

USgamer 100/100

« Its unconventional, non-violent subject matter and gameplay also skilfully and confidently prove that not all games need an "attack" button to be enjoyable and interesting -- and given the growing sense of weariness a lot of us have been feeling with super-violent experiences, that's something that should be celebrated. »

Hooked Gamers 98/100

« In Gone Home, there are moments of fear, moments of joy, moments of sadness, and moments of peace. In the end, there is acceptance, the kind which comes from a tale naturally concluded and a chapter neatly closed. »

« Gone Home is the video game equivalent of that friend who corners you at a party to "share their truth" for two hours straight—except you paid for the privilege and there's zero payoff. You play as a prodigal daughter returning home to... wander around an eerily empty mansion picking up sticky notes and diary entries like the world's most tedious scavenger hunt. No enemies, no puzzles worth solving, no actual gameplay. Just atmospheric walking and **** much-hyped "narrative masterpiece" boils down to a very 2010s coming-out story told through environmental storytelling that feels less like clever discovery and more like unpaid emotional labor. By the time I reached the underwhelming conclusion, I wasn't moved—I was annoyed that this glorified tech demo had the audacity to call **** your time (and money). Just read a short story instead. At least books don't pretend to be revolutionary for letting you open drawers. »

« Beautiful story in this interactive work of art. Enjoy the world and the story it tells. »

« Spannendes Indiespiel, welches geschickt mit den Erwartungen an ein Horrorspiel spielt und am Ende mit einer berührenden Story endet. »

oemardanoes 8/10

« As players delve into its intensely personal story, Gone Home's masterful use of environmental cues and nuances creates a powerful emotional bond. Carefully positioned items and a classic mid-1990s atmosphere add to the immersion experience, enabling relaxed exploration without any pressure. However, because involvement is restricted to wandering and inspecting, people looking for action or typical gaming may find it passive. Additionally, the targeted themes may not be relatable to everyone, which could lessen the emotional impact, and the pacing may seem slow to those who need more guidance. Overall, even while many people enjoy its simplicity, some might prefer more intricate gameplay and a more detailed story. »

« Gone Home tells an incredibly straightforward story that managed to quite effectively tug at these decrepit heartstrings. Considering the fact that over a decade has passed since its release, I can imagine that I missed a whole bunch of very civil discourse over this game's topics and themes. So, with a 13-year-old delay not so dissimilar to that of trying to open a tab in Internet Explorer, here are my surface-level thoughts for this hour-and-a-half-long game: The home you explore is just a bit before my time. While I can see anybody a few years older than me (and living in the USA for that matter) connecting a lot more to the myriad of references that inhabit this game like a 90s time capsule, personally, I found the house itself to be just relatable enough for me not to zone out while picking up and examining every single thing in it and nothing more. The voice acting was pretty great, managing to portray the emotions of the storyteller in a convincing manner. I found some of the notes to not be all that well written, especially for somebody as talented in writing as Sam apparently was. And while I'll always adore a game that doesn't stretch its runtime, I feel like an additional 45 minutes to an hour to properly explore the characters wouldn't be amiss. I am also not fully convinced with the idea that a "return from abroad after a year" plot and the story you uncover in this house are the best way to tell this type of story. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it; I just feel like the emotional impact could be far greater if this was told from a first-person perspective and not via journals that the player has to find. P.S. Mouse acceleration, smoothing, and mouse focus while over important objects are war crimes, and the fact that all three of these were enabled at the beginning means that anyone less tech-savvy, new to video games, or just impatient for that matter might bounce off this game before even giving it a proper chance. »

« Insignificant game with an utterly dull and predictable plot, railroaded exploration, and an extremely short length. »

« Güzel bir hikaye. Evi keşfetmece her odada hikaye açılıyor ben yürümekten ve not okumaktan sıkılmam diyorsanız 2-3 saat ayırmaktan zarar gelmez. »
