The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring, développé par Liquid Entertainment et édité par Sierra Entertainment, est sorti le 8 novembre 2003 sur PC (Microsoft Windows). Ce jeu de stratégie en temps réel, mêlant également aventure, propose de poursuivre la quête de destruction de l'Anneau unique à travers le premier titre de stratégie en temps réel inspiré de la saga. Les batailles de masse opposent les forces de la lumière et des ténèbres pour le contrôle de la Terre du Milieu, et le joueur peut incarner le camp du bien pour détruire l'Anneau ou celui du mal pour dominer la région. La destruction d'unités permet de gagner de l'expérience ainsi que des améliorations visuelles. Le jeu utilise le système de protection SecuROM 4 et affiche un score Metacritic de 67 pour une note agrégée de 73,04.
L'accueil critique a été mitigé mais ouvert à certains égards. Game Over Online a salué le fait que, en tant que l'un des premiers titres de stratégie basés sur l'œuvre de Tolkien, le jeu puisse initier de nombreux fans des films au genre. De son côté, IGN a indiqué que pour qui cherche simplement du lore et des unités tolkiéniennes, ce n'est pas un mauvais choix, tout en prévenant de ne pas attendre de rupture novatrice. Parmi les joueurs, certains regrettent que le titre, bien qu'alternatif intéressant à Battle for Middle Earth d'EA avec quelques défauts, évoque davantage WarCraft III par sa limite de population et l'absence d'échelle épique, tandis qu'un autre estime rétrospectivement que le jeu avait été sous-estimé à sa sortie.

« Being one of the first strategy titles based on Tolkien's locus classicus, War of the Ring should introduce a good many movie fans to the strategy genre -- and most likely, no greater percentage of Ring fans exists than amongst the gaming demographic -- but veteran real-time strategy players might want to look elsewhere if depth is what they're seeking. »
« If you're just looking for a game with some Tolkein lore and units, then this isn't a bad choice at all. Just don't expect to find anything ground-breaking or extraordinarily amazing inside. War of the Ring is a decent game, not great, but certainly not bad. »

« Отличная игра! Буквально недавно вспомнил о ней – играл в годы ранней юности. Считаю, игра была в свое время явно недооценена, к сожалению. Несмотря на обвинения в копировании более известных стратегий, проект на деле достаточно самобытный, с отличной для своего времени графикой и, не побоюсь этого слова, физикой – во время игры ощущается взимодействие мира и персонажей, а не только изменение текстур и передвижение моделек. Даже в 2020 рекомендую к прохождению, в первую очередь ценителям контента по тематике Властелина колец. »
