Sorti le 14 décembre 2000 sur Nintendo 64, Pokémon Stadium 2 est développé par HAL Laboratory et Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development, puis édité par Nintendo et Gradiente. Le titre s'inscrit dans les genres de la simulation, de la stratégie et de la stratégie au tour par tour.
Le jeu propose une trame narrative où la progression repose sur la victoire dans les Coupes du Stade et l'achèvement du Château des Maîtres d'Arène. Une fois ces objectifs atteints, le Rival du joueur fait son apparition ; le vaincre débloque le Round 2, qui impose de relever les mêmes défis avec des équipes adverses modifiées et une difficulté nettement rehaussée. Dans le mode Stade, le joueur compose une équipe de six créatures parmi une sélection de 250 Pokémon, incluant des légendaires. Quatre Coupes sont au programme, chacune structurée en manches de huit combats. Hormis la Petite Coupe et la Coupe Prime, chaque Coupe comprend quatre tours, nommés d'après des types de Poké Balls, qu'il faut enchaîner pour l'emporter.
Côté accueil, le titre obtient une note agrégée de 68,11. La presse spécialisée a salué la richesse du contenu : Games Radar le qualifie de « l'un des packages les plus complets et aboutis que l'on puisse voir », le recommandant à tous les amateurs avertis. GamePro estime quant à lui que « les fans de Pokémon ne peuvent pas se tromper avec Stadium 2 », mettant en avant la possibilité de faire combattre ses propres Pokémon en couleur grâce au Transfer Pak. Du côté des joueurs, les avis Metacritic soulignent pour certains une expérience supérieure aux épisodes principaux sur Game Boy Color et Game Boy Advance, le considérant comme la meilleure itération de la série Stadium, tout en regrettant l'absence d'une véritable suite. D'autres évoquent un fort potentiel, louant la qualité des stades et un gameplay jugé brillant et basé sur la compétence.

Sure the rental Pokemon are awful but using your own team from Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal will be a lot better. I had to use my own team from Crystal. Overall, this game still holds up and I want all of you to play it someday! »
« This is a pretty fun game except it has one fatal flaw. If you do not own the game boy reader thingy for the N64 controller, it is a barebones, boring, mundane experience. Kind of a middle of the road basic Pokémon game that should not be $70. »
