Games Master UK 84/100

« Action-based online RPG-ing, and nowhere near as intimidating as its PC-based cousins. [Christmas 2006, p.88] »

Pelit (Finland) 81/100

« A decent hack 'n' slash action-RPG. Too bad the multiplayer game is too expensive for what it is. [Jan 2007] »

1UP 80/100

« A throwback to the good ol' days of "Diablo 2"-style dungeon exploring, PSU is a value-packed, worthwhile action-RPG that finds its biggest challenge not in its modern-day peers, but in escaping the shadow of its predecessor: "Phantasy Star Online (PSO)." »

GamingTrend 79/100

« Personally, I was turned off rather quickly by the ancient game play and dated development decisions. »

Gamer 2.0 78/100

« Universe is a strong and worthy sequel to the 2000 Dreamcast classic, but key absences – specifically the offline multiplayer – make a very good case for waiting. »

Electronic Gaming Monthly 72/100

« Sure, I applaud Sega for attempting to transform the single-player experience into something meatier, but poor voice acting and clumsy storytelling lend the proceedings a cheesy B-movie vibe. [Jan. 2007, p.101] »

GamesRadar+ 70/100

« Phantasy Star Universe, in the end, is just more of the same thing: simple dungeon crawling. It's fun online; it's not fun offline. This is a hard one to rate, as it's pretty convoluted. It ultimately depends on what type of experience you're looking for when you load it up. »

360 Gamer Magazine UK 70/100

« Sure, the online world can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you've got to grips with communicating and finding your way around, you and your friends will be hooked. [Issue 18, p.84] »

« I am one of the people that is personally nostalgic over this game, but I do see some of its flaws for what they are. I think this is probably one of the best Asian MMOs of the era, undoubtedly. It separated itself from its roots a bit too much for some peoples taste, and the story isn't anything great. The gameplay, however, and the community, at least when it was online, is where this game shined very brightly. »

« it's a pretty good game, and I enjoyed it a lot. The graphics aren't anything to show off the power of the 360, but they're fine enough. The story is pretty good, and I liked Ethan's character. The one thing I will complain about is that the missions are super long. It took me an hour to rescue Lumia in the first mission. A good game if you have at least an hour and a half to play at a time. Also, I don't like the fact that you can only save at save points. It doesn't bother me but it's not particularly ideal. »

« Personally I loved it! Wonderful balance of social and action, with voice chat and lots of fun to be had. My second favourite MMO of all time, after Second Life. So yeah erm, top notch! These days it might not be worth it though because the servers are offline :( The offline modes are ok though, and there might be a private server soon! »

« What nutcase gave this game a 10 out of 10. When people start reviewing games in a rediculious light it ruins the meta scores. Ban them from this site. Oh just forgot whoever has been giving perfect scores for this game go and get oblivion or fallout. Would not recommend this game to anyone in a million years. Its really really bad. DO NOT BUY. »
