Phantasy Star Online 2, développé par Online Entertainment R&D et édité par Sega et AsiaSoft, est sorti le 4 juillet 2012. Ce jeu mêlant aventure, jeu de rôle et hack 'n' slash est disponible sur PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One et PlayStation Vita. L'intrigue se déroule au sein de la flotte Oracle, composée de quatre espèces — Humans, Newman, CAST et Deuman — qui explore l'espace via les groupes ARKS, avant d'affronter la menace des Falspawn, un danger contré grâce aux Photons. Le titre propose des missions variées, une personnalisation poussée et un combat en action RPG en free-to-play, avec des parties allant jusqu'à quatre joueurs ou des zones multiparties accueillant jusqu'à douze participants. Sorti initialement au Japon et en Asie en 2012 et 2014, le jeu a connu un lancement mondial en 2020 en Amérique du Nord sur Xbox One et Windows 10, puis sur Steam et dans 33 pays, intégrant le multijoueur cross-platform et des achats intégrés. La version New Genesis ultérieure offre un terrain ouvert accueillant 32 joueurs, de nouvelles actions comme Photon Dash et Photon Glide, et une création de personnage évoluée. La presse a salué l'opportunité de s'immerger dans un monde excitant selon Destructoid, tandis que certains joueurs sur Metacritic regrettent que le jeu donne l'impression d'approcher la décennie d'existence, et d'autres le qualifient de légendaire et riche en activités. « The problem is, Phantasy Star Online 2 still feels like a game nearing a decade old mark. Like man MMOs of our current generation, however fun they continue to be, and however nostalgic PSO players may feel when playing, it still has a quality of being a little dated. Still, there is plenty of fight left in PSO2, and if you haven’t played it, or any version of Phantasy Star Online before, then it’s going to be new to you. Phantasy Star Online 2 is a fantastic game with a lot to offer. With a generous Free 2 Play payment model, PSO2 is certainly one of the best options out there for gamers looking to try something different, without overspending. »

« I have played PSO ultima BB weeks before playing PSO2 in 2020 when it released in NA. I played PSO back in the days on gamecube online for a good bit as well. Let me tell, you, PSO2 is quite disappointing. I'd much rather continue playing the original one or Ultima BB. It's just the gameplay is not as tight. It's nice that it's fast paced, but it doesn't feel as rewarding. »

« Great game!! Loved PSO on the Dreamcast back in the day and this game builds off of that with a limitless amount of quests and ways to customize your characters. Very generous free to play but I'd recommend buying at least one month of premium since you get a lot more and its only about $15. »
« I loved PSO on Xbox in 2003 very much, but this game feels too different, in the wrong way. Weird walking animations like slippery footsteps, more mainstreamed combat system, complicated menus, menu sounds that will let explode your head, loot that feels not important. I am very dissappointed. Waited for so long. Would like to play the older PSO again. »
