Sorti le 17 décembre 1999, Mario Party 2 propose à Mario et ses amis une nouvelle session de jeu de société où les personnages revêtent des tenues adaptées à chacun des cinq plateaux d'aventure inédits. Développé par Hudson Soft et CAProductions et édité par Nintendo et Gradiente, ce titre disponible sur Nintendo 64, 64DD, Wii et Wii U mêle jeu de cartes et de société ainsi que quiz et trivia, avec de nouveaux plateaux, mini-jeux et mécanismes apportant davantage de défis en multijoueur. La durée principale est estimée à sept heures et le parcours complet à vingt-cinq heures, pour une note agrégée de 78,05. Certains joueurs ont salué la présence de costumes assortis aux plateaux et jugé que ce volet améliorait les idées du premier opus grâce à ses plateaux, mini-jeux et ambiance.

« this Mario Party had a clever little feature when every board you went on the characters would always wear a fancy bit of clothing to match the board as you played the game so maybe if you jumped into a pirate level you would wear pirate clothes or even if you jumped into a Western they would wear western clothes so like I say this Mario pie was very very clever from any other Mario Party put in the characters into the scenery values very well done »
« Now this is a Mario Party game. This took the ideas that were in MP1 and made them even better. The boards, mini games, costumes, and atmosphere made this so much better than the original in every way they could ****'s still great in the grand scheme of things aswell. It's definitely not the best one in the series, but it's pretty high up there in the ranking. For a game that came out in 1999, it is still just as brokenly fun as it was when it was released. Still has issues, but it's pretty great. »
« I don't understand why this game isn't rated better. Out of all the Mario Party games I've played, this is undoubtedly the best. It's unbelievable unbalanced, has the best range and quality of games, and has so many creative and fun maps. I may be a bit biased since this is the first Mario Party I've ever played but I don't think that has much to do with it. »

« I honestly don't see this as the best Mario Party game, compared to the majority of people out there. It certainly gave a few more things to the Mario Party formula, but a lot of this was added more so to the single player experience than the multi-player one. Still though, its Mario Party, even if it does borrow heavily from the first, its still a wonderfully horrible game to play with friends. »
