Description (IGDB)

Mario Party 3 is the third and final Mario Party title for the Nintendo 64. A total of eight characters are available to choose from: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, and newcomers Waluigi and Princess Daisy. Mario Party 3 features duel maps, in which two players try to lower each other's stamina to zero using non-playable characters such as Chain Chomps. It is the first Mario Party game to feature Luigi's main voice and also it is last Mario game where Princess Daisy appears in a yellow and white dress, and with long hair, as well as the last Mario game (until New Super Mario Bros. Wii) in which Yoshi's "record-scratching" voice is used. It is also the first Mario Party game to have multiple save slots.

Core Magazine 75/100

« Some of the mini-games are pretty bad and the single player mode is still not worth trying, but on the whole this is a very enjoyable game. »

« After spending solo time with the game, I've decided that Mario Party 3 is like that last guest who refuses to accept that the party is over. »

Electric Playground 65/100

« There isn’t a single satisfying mode you can play Mario Party 3 in, and the sad thing is, all of this boredom could have been solved with one very, very simple option; let the player set the level of game animations they desire. »

« This game is definitely a downgrade from its predecessor. The only reason for this is it's minigames. Minigames are the main reason you play a Mario Party games so when they're just mediocre at best, it ruins the entire game. My rating might be a bit confusing for what I just said, but the game is better in literally every other aspect. Boards, characters, single player, and balancing. It's not even that the minigames are insanely bad, I just find myself wanting to play MP2's minigames more. »

« Great game and fantastic sequel to MP2. The sheer amount of different items makes this game a lot more fun and tactical, whereas the previous titles felt rather random and mostly luck-based to me. Only downside: It could have had at least one more (volcanic/lava themed) board, in my opinion. Overall an underrated gem in the series, I had so many fun moments playing this with friends. »

« Probably my second favorite Mario party game. A super emotional experience with what might be the franchises strongest story. And man they really figured out the gameplay. Such a strong entry in the franchise and I can see why many consider it to be the peak. »

« There have been many debates over which of the three N64 Mario Parties is the best one, and I would pick this version. There are two new characters to play as who became staples to the series being Daisy, and the legend himself, Waluigi. There are six boards to choose from, and while they’re a bit of a step down from the previous title, we still have some gems like Woody Woods, Waluigi’s Island, and more. On top of that, there is a duel mode with six more boards, where there’s only two people, no minigames, and the objective is to attack the other player rather than collect coins and stars. This worked as a side mode and it did the job… unlike later instalments where the side mode is the MAIN mode. Items return from the previous game with even more options. One example is the reverse mushroom that allows you to move backwards, which was such a cool idea that they never used since. The minigames are all great with the exception of MPIQ which was just horribly executed, but games like Eatsa Pizza make up for it! This was the first game in the series to include a fully fleshed out story mode, where you play as one character and navigate through every board, beating your opponents and earning stamps from the millennium star. Mario Party 3 includes just about everything that makes Mario Party amazing, and it’s in my Top 3 games from this franchise! »

« Oh boy. What went wrong here? After Mario Party 2's solid gameplay, boards and story, instead of going back to the first game, the best on the N64, and revamping it up, what did they do? Well, let's see... So the story in Mario Party games usually aren't the greatest, but Mario Party 3's story is just... bad. It starts of with the Milennium Star (get it? because this game released in the year 2000 and you collect stars? heh heh.) that turns out to be bad and stuff and on the way you experience OK boards but the minigames, oh, the minigames. I don't think there's a single minigame in Mario Party 3 I shall ever want to come back too. Well, yeah, Rockin' Raceway is fine but it's controls are way out of hand and most of the minigames and especially the boards are just so, so tedious in single player. Yes, I know you could say that about 17 Mario Parties (not Star Rush) but in this one it's especially soul-draning. They tried to make the single player mode worthwhile but ended up hindering too much that this just feels like Mario Party 2's annoying teenage cousin. However, for some reason by making the single-player ****, this game actually has the BEST multiplayer in any of the N64 Mario Parties! Just because of that the bad boards and fine minigames don't even matter anymore! And you know the story I whined about before is actually bursting with charm, most notably Daisy slapping Bowser into the hot, melty atmosphere of the Sun's core. Ahh. Overall, Mario Party 3 is undoubtedly the worst on the N64, by no means is it bad, if you play it in the right mindset and way. »
