Guild Wars 2 will be free to play this weekend, starting Friday
Guild Wars 2 was hyped to be the MMO for people who don’t like MMOs, and it has certainly been doing well. Chris loved the game, and NCSoft has been selling copies by the millions. If you’ve been holding off on trying it, though, then this weekend might be your moment. Guild Wars 2 will be hosting a free-to-play weekend beginning at 12:01 a.m. on August 23 and running until 11:59 p.m. on August 25 (PDT). All you’ll need to get started is your name, email address, birth date, and an alias. Guild Wars 2, like its predecessor, operates on a single purchase and forgoes ongoing subscription fees. Expansive story content, dynamic public events, and world-versus-world PvP modes offer lots of stuff to do, so you’ll only be able to see a fraction of the content in a weekend’s worth of time. You can over to the Guild Wars 2 site to read up on the game, check out our review, or go straight to the registration page to get signed up.
Guild Wars 1 “thriving,” may “last forever,” developer says
An electronic afterlife is tough to find in gaming. The old makes room for the new in ways that can sometimes be brutally disruptive. Guild Wars 1 developer ArenaNet is working to ensure the community behind the 2005 MMORPG has enough support to live far into the future, according to recent comments by lead content designer Mike Zadorojny (via Eurogamer). Even after the release of its sequel last year, the first Guild Wars has retained a "thriving" player base, Zadorojny said, and the technology supporting the game should ensure this remains the case. "The game itself was so efficient on the server side in terms of the resources, like, it runs on a fraction of the hardware that we need for running Guild Wars 2, so having that on the back-burner is nothing compared to GW2," he said. One key factor in maintaining the online world of the original Guild Wars has been the creation and continued use of automation to organize the game's tournaments, events, and week-to-week schedule. The small team currently dedicated to maintaining the game won't be putting together new content, but works instead to take care of any "massive issues," according to Zadorojny. These are presumably issues that go beyond the scope of the automatic system the developers have created, but the structures ArenaNet has behind the game definitely sound like they were designed with a long lifespan in mind. "We've been doing a lot of automation support so that the game itself could last forever, even without anybody really touching it," Zadorojny said.
Guild Wars 2 is now cheaper by ten bucks
Because warring should be available for everyone. That's according to ArenaNet, anyway, which has cited player accessibility as one of their primary reasons for the adjustment. Guild Wars 2's price point has been lowered by a tenner for both the digital and digital deluxe editions, bringing them down to $50 and $70 respectively. While it's not a massive difference, it's an interesting time to be implementing a permanent discount—episodic content, such as what we've seen of the Southsun update, has been coming out of the MMO at a rabbit-breeding pace, and there's only more to come. Additionally, ArenaNet says that "record numbers of people" are playing. Could this be a sign that free-to-play is now so thoroughly dominating the MMO scene that it's lowering the price point for even subscriptionless MMOs? In any case, if you've been wanting to check out GW2 and a $10 drop is enough to sway you, scoot on over to the Guild Wars 2 website.

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)
« We were overwhelmed by the huge range of top-quality gameplay that's available here for $49.99 (USD) with no online fees. »
« The look of Guild Wars is magnificent. [Aug 2005, p.84] »
« A revolutionary title that has completely redefined the possibilities contained within this oversaturated and rather tired genre. »
« Guild Wars will be in my hard drive for a very long time. I anticipate that this game probably will pull quite a few people away from the pay-per month MMORPG’s that are currently out there and will develop a very strong following. »
« Anyone looking for an engrossing online RPG experience without a monthly fee draining your wallet, Guild Wars is the game you simply must own. »
« The success of Guild Wars lays in the lack of a monthly fee as well as in its core principles and game mechanics. This has attracted an important number of casual players, which are very happy that they can play PvP without having to invest a lot of time into repetitive actions, focusing instead on learning and developing new tactics and strategies. »
« Guild Wars is all about the gaming experience and that experience is one of absolute pleasure from moment to moment. [PC Zone] »
« One of the best MMORPGs on the market today. Whether you are drawn in by the unique guild system, the intense PvP battles, or the even the visually stunning graphics, any gamer can find a reason to play Guild Wars. »

« This game an absolute binger, this game is the wow killer and always will be. It's a game, easy at the beginning and little by little as you progress it offers HARD content, really hard, and there is no casual player, the game forces you to know how to play the mechanics, you have no other choice than to be good at having fun in pve and pvp. The pvp is absolutely amazing, one of the best ever. Guild wars 2 is a.... next to this game. It deserves by far the game of the year. »
« Great as a narrative game but not very good as an "MMORPG" even though it really looks like one. The servers will always be up (as stated by the developers) and you will occasionally see a player or maybe even a group. The game gives you pretty good AI companions so it is never hard and you can simply enjoy the 3 different campaigns it offers. »

« Personally Guild Wars will be my No. 1 MMO of all time. The amount of time you can put into this game, trying so many different builds and farm methods is insane. It generally aged pretty good, but PVP is sadly filled with Bots, but everything in PVE is still possible to do Solo or if you like there are still some active Guilds playing. 10/10 best game of the MMORPG Genre »
« Pros -The graphics are fairly ground-breaking for the time the game was released. -The difficulty makes the game feel progressive. the last couple of areas feel like end-game zones due to the jump in difficulty. - The world building and zone design is fantastic, the diversity of biomes and the map design is S tier. - The holiday events are very in-depth and add a lot of content to the game. - The story is fantastic and the main reason I wanted a sequel Cons - There can be a lot of screen clutter due to the party size and abilities overlapping one another. »
« The best (mmo) rpg ever made, by a stretch. Highly recommend buying it with a friend and playing through the trilogy. »
« Best Game I played, ever. Unfortunately the sequel (GW2) did not follow the same mechanisms, classes and skills. It would be wonderful games with new interface and improved gameplay. 17 years after its release, I still play with great pleasure. »
