Eternal Sonata
Description (IGDB)
Eternal Sonata is a role-playing video game developed by tri-Crescendo and published by Namco Bandai Games. The game is centered on the Polish romantic pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 39. The story envisions a fictional world dreamed by Chopin during his last hours that is influenced by Chopin's life and music, and in which he himself is a playable character, among others. The game's battle system centers on musical elements and character-unique special attacks. Light and darkness play a part in the appearance and abilities of enemies on the battlefield, as well as the types of magic that can be cast. The game features a selection of Chopin's compositions played by pianist Stanislav Bunin, though the original compositions were composed and arranged by Motoi Sakuraba. It is notable for its use of classical piano pieces, educational cutscenes featuring real paintings and photographs (in contrast to the cel-shading graphics of the game) and lush landscape design.

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)
« A unique concept, stunning graphics, inspiring audio and enjoyable gameplay comes together to create a fantastic RPG experience that rivals close competition. »
« Eternal Sonata is the JRPG that the 360 needs, and the story saves it from being cliche, but gamers shouldn't be expecting a reinvention of the genre. [Sept 2007, p.72] »
« What it may lack in length, it more than makes up for in absolutely every other aspect. The battle system is addictively fun, the multifaceted story is riveting, and the graphics are amazing... we couldn't ask for much more. »
« While the storyline is certainly one that has been created solely for the purpose of amusing, it does so on many levels and is easily one of the more entertaining titles you'll find in the realm of role-playing games. »
« Lovingly crafted, musical, involving, delightful, beautiful, addictive and crammed with anime cheese. [Issue#25, p.92] »
« The story and some of the mechanics do work better in Blue Dragon but Eternal Sonata's artistic mastery and amazing combat help to balance the scales. »
« Nevertheless, it remains a beautiful, engaging and ridiculously addictive game much thanks to its ludicrous amount of details, bubbles and cel-shading. »
« While the balance issues are irritating, to say the least, Eternal Sonata's artistic appeal more than makes up for what the gameplay is lacking. With an excellent story, interesting characters, impressive music, and quite frankly the most beautiful graphics ever produced in a video game, Eternal Sonata is without question the first must-play RPG of the new console generation. »

« Amazing game, surprisingly. I still listen to its OST to this day. It was a bit too long. »
« If you've played this game you are an total and absolute nerd and I welcome you into my coven. Put this on the marketplace for XBox One, Microsoft, you cowards! »
« Chances are nobody will read this review in 2021 or beyond, but, this game is truly something special and is greatly deserving of a remaster or a remake.. and maybe even a sequel or spiritual successor some day? The battle system is a unique blend of real time turned based features making it a strategic and fun game to play. One of the best soundtracks and art style in a JRPG since I've ever heard and seen other than Final Fantasy and the Nier series. If you can get passed the bad delivery of lines and somewhat childish characters, the story is something special and memorable. »
« I enjoyed Eternal Sonata very much. Ending was different and I appreciated that. System is easy to pick up, especially if you have played many JRPG's. »
« One of the roleplaying games with the best combat system I have ever seen. It is a pity that this company does not continue to release jewelry like this. Hopefully one day, with the resources and the muscle of money that he deserves, they will do works of the stature of this eternal sonata. »
