Ici, seul l'actio...

Steam discounts all things Japanese for Golden Week
It’s the first day of Golden Week in Japan, and while that may not mean much to those in English-speaking territories, it’s one of the nation’s biggest holidays. As Valve never miss an excuse for a sale, that means that there’s some great deals on games from Japanese developers and publishers. If visual novels, fighting games or JRPGs are your thing, there’s some good stuff at slashed prices today. Here’s the official sale highlights page, you can see all the current week-long deals here, and a handful of personal picks below. (more…)
8 Japanese games that deserve to find a new home on PC
The past year has brought Yakuza, Bayonetta, Ni no Kuni II and many other Japanese series to PC for the first time. In light of that, it’s tempting to demand that every classic and everything new and exciting from Japan gets ported over from its original console home. There’s nothing wrong with that, but anyone can ask for Personas 3-5. I’m here to advocate for the swathes of great, older Japanese games that would feel at home on PC, but which haven’t yet been canonised. Games which break the mould, and which aren’t filled with the usual JRPG tropes. I ve picked out eight that feel like less obvious choices, all of which deserve to find a new audience on PC. (more…)

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)
« If Velvet’s party of anti-heroes were written by lesser writers, the thirst for revenge would have tired us out far too early; revenge is a state of mind of heightened emotion and impact, and over the course of a full-length JRPG the passion and anger would have boiled over far too soon. But, thanks to brilliant characterisation and the ability to throw some genuine humour and moments of softness into the mix, the team at Bandai Namco has been able to deliver one of the most refreshingly nuanced quests that we’ve seen in this series, and for the first time in a very long time, I haven’t been able to put a Tales game down. »
« Tales of Berseria is one of the best Japanese role games that PlayStation 4 has to offer. It features an amazing story with a duration of at least 60 hours. This is how this genre of games should always be. »
« A combination of complex characters and gameplay makes this one as satisfying as it is enjoyable. Even if you haven’t played any of its predecessors, Tales of Berseria is more than worth your time. »
« The story is gripping from the very beginning and keeps hold throughout the entire game. When it comes to the new battle system, I felt that Tales of Bersaria proved to be easily accessible to newcomers as well as offer extra benefits to those who’d like to master it. »
« Overall, Berseria has its flaws, but those feel like nitpicks compared to the solid core gameplay and story, and it marks a strong return to form for an older series that doesn't quite command the same respect it used to. The writing and characters are better than they've ever been, and the skill-based combat is no slouch either. On the other hand, dungeon-crawling can get a little tedious, the crafting system is acceptable at best, and a rushed localization certainly doesn't help either. But despite all that, any fan of the series deserves to check this out, and probably even people who aren't fans yet. »
« Faster, smoother, and bursting at the seams with content, Berseria delivers a much needed kick to the series. »
« Tales of Berseria is a surprisingly strong showing for this long-running series. Its tragic story of broken people fighting on the wrong side of history makes it utterly compelling, and its well-tuned combat more than makes up for its lack of interesting environments. Simply put, this is a tale too heartbreaking to miss, or to forget. »
« Extensive and surprising JRPG that shows a powerful history dressed up with an improved combat system that offers many strategic possibilities. »
Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)
« Never have I ever played a game that wastes your tine as this one. The world is too big and empty, and bombed with enemies - in combination with that the combat is boring. Resulting in you- the player doing nothing but dodging enemies along huge maps or corridors. And be prepared for lots of backtracking since fast travel does falsely exist -it never work when you need it. Dialogues are voiced and good but just too much. The main cast is interesting. Well written and entertaining but the dialogue is as mentioned too much which makes the pacing terrible. This game was really behind for its time: -crazy to realise it came out 2016 when it feels like it had released 10-15 years prior: an early 2000s game. »
« Decent revenge story ruined by mindless button-smashing combat along with a lineal world design and some overly-pretentious quotes meant to make the game apper deep and phylosophical I would take FF 15 and Ys 8 over this, any day of the week. »

« While I don’t think the story was the best in the series like a lot of people seem to, I did think it was really good. I liked the darker tone it took for the story and for the characters as well. Story and characters were both 9/10s for me, but unfortunately the gameplay was horrid. I mean literally the worst I’ve ever played. Game was way too easy had to turn it up to hard to even get a challenge and still only died on two boss fights. Battle system was button mash central where you would literally just spam one button the entire fight and then press another one every now and then. Overall a very good game though. »
« Did not like the combat in this one. Forgetable characters. Did not remember anything about the story as well. »
« Story 9/10: Really amazing story, made me feel for each of the characters, and had moments which genuinely left me in awe, my only problem with it is that it's a prequel, not JUST a prequel, but a prequel to one of the worst games in the series iirc, it has moments where I feel like it's going 'see! you recognise that? Right?' and it just leaves me with half the impact. especially the end where it really digs it in.Like, yeah, I want to experience the sequel, but I've heard it's an absolute slog. Other than that, this is amazing. Music 8/10: Genuine bops in there, most of the pieces are just general RPG music. Visuals 6/10: It looks pretty outdated for a game from 2016, especially with the low quality rough textures. The colours are quite desaturated too, so it's not the most pleasing to look at, but I guess it was fine for its time. Gameplay: I need to split this up. Overworld 5/10: Glorified walking sim, you don't unlock the infinite fast travel item until the last dungeon, and the bike-esque movement option isn't unlocked until 2/3rds into the story, which requires you do go to a specific point in the current area first to unlock the ability to use it in that area. Battles 7/10: They're fine, but you can just mash through most of it/ Misc gripes: The tutorials are no help, you don't unlock things that should be there at the start, and core game mechanics are sometimes locked behind secret superbosses (which are really easy despite being like 10 levels under them), enemy levels are a joke, I spent most of the game 3-4 levels under normal enemies and were still beating them in around 12s (I was playing on normal.) Games really need to stop putting their recommended, balanced difficulty in the 'HARD' option, especially when a higher level actually decreases XP gains - I played on merciless on P3R for most of my time playing it, it just makes it less rewarding having to turn on hard mode in the options menu. Final score 8/10: I definitely recommend this game just for its story, though if there were a quality anime adaptation OR Manga, I'd recommend it over the game, but there isn't.Definitely gonna try out more from the Tales series »
