Sensory overload in 360° 3-D.
Welcome to Descent™ - 27 levels of the most mind-bending, stomach-churning action game ever. Featuring true 3-Dimensional worlds with light source shading, texture mapping, 3-D morphing, directional sound effects and sizzling music, this is technology taken to the limit.
Something has happened at Lunar Base I. The Post-Terran Mining Company has lost contact with the miners and none of the mining robots are responding. The PTMC has brought in you the Material Defender to deal with the situation. Your mission is to find any survivors and find the source of threat. You will start a journey that takes you from the Moon to Pluto. Best of luck Material Defender.
Lunge straight down mine shafts, twist around never-ending tunnels and fight your way past robotic menaces in an environment that's truly 6 degrees of freedom... move up, move down, shoot everything everywhere. Hang onto your senses (and your lunch) as you drop straight down mine shafts on a ride that'll leave you spinning.
And what's the good of losing your mind if you can't share the experience with your friends? Descent invites you and your buddies to dive into the action together with head-to-head combat and cooperative two-player modem and eight-player network support.
Get ready for Descent...

Students added ray tracing to Descent and it looks sick
Classic shooter Descent, released in 1995, has gotten a facelift from some enterprising students who've added a fat stack of technical upgrades to the open, shareware fork of the game. Most notable is that perennial glory: pathtraced global illumination. It's what the kids these days are calling "ray traced lighting.".. Read more.
Descent: Underground resurfaces with a shorter title and more single-player focus
For a while, I’d forgotten about free-floating FPS Descent: Underground – turns out it had just gone radio-silent for a retooling, announced here. Still being worked on by Descendent Studios and now backed by publisher Little Orbit, the game is now just called ‘Descent’, and is now a more single-player oriented game, diverging from the originally multiplayer-centric Underground. It’ll be entering beta testing in November and is due for a 2019 release, and will be a free upgrade (along with all pre-order DLC) for Underground’s early access owners and Kickstarter backers. Below, two new teaser trailers. (more…)
Descent formerly Descent: Underground begins beta testing in November
Descent: Underground was successfully Kickstarted in April 2015, went to Early Access later that year, and then in September 2017 was taken down so the developers could "focus on implementing single-player, tech trees, and the other cool features we’ve talked about." That was the final update on Steam until yesterday, when publisher Little Orbit dropped a new trailer and said that a Descent beta will begin in November, followed by a release in early 2019. The beta will be open to anyone who preorders the game, as well as everyone had it on Early Access before it was removed. Early Access supporters will also be given the preorder bonuses now being offered, including a custom "Viola" ship, beta-exclusive challenges, "Secret Missions" DLC, and more. "This testing window has an important job to do. At different times, we will ask you to try out and give feedback on different aspects of the game, including the single-player campaign. Your feedback will inform our work to polish and refine the Descent experience ahead of our Retail Release," the developers wrote. They also promised to be more communicative now than "open development" has resumed. As for the slightly-changed name (it's just Descent now), a studio rep said that's intended to more accurately reflect the expanded scope of the project: "Underground was removed from the title during development as the game has become a larger reimagining of the original as a whole and not just an addition." More information about the new Descent, and preorder links (it's not back on Steam just yet) can be had at descent2018.com.

« One of the very first PC games that I was actually addicted to! I remember coming home from school on a Friday and jumping into this game and the next thing I knew it was Saturday morning! Still in my library today and it still plays just as good today as it did then! »
« Review of Single Player only. Forget about Gears of War and Uncharted - Descent is the prototype cover shooter. Hard to believe the developers didn't intend it to be so given they designed their levels as a series of tight corridors with mostly 90 degree angles, and placed various missile 2-shot-kill and minigun hit-scan enemies behind them. Well, it turns out that when you do that, the only way the player can win is by looking up guides to see where the enemies are beforehand, edging one pixel past the corner, and firing a missile. I figured this out after 3 frustrating hours of trying to play this like a normal game. I looked up a walkthrough on YouTube of level 6 to confirm this before I gave up. I'd suggest you do the same before you bother with this game. Genuinely amazing soundtrack though, +1 point for that. ((Reviewed with Redux mod.)) »
« What I would give for a modern AAA reboot of this. The labyrinthine levels, the '6 degrees of freedom', the music, the waving hostages and above all: the panicked escape from the mine. A great game not given its dues. »
« This is the BEST videogame I have EVER played. It has what it takes to make you have the excitement and fun you desire. There´s a new reloaded version that came out, and it's FREE! Search "Descent 1 Rebirth" for more info. I TRULY recommend it. »
« Hey! Where u going? Sit your ass down and listen to grandpa's story! Descent was a brain-blower, and i loved it for that! It was the first game where i had to use more keys than just left, right, up, down, shift, cntr. Wow, this game made me work out - but, boy, was it worth it! Put on some raving techno trance, and fly through mazes shooting weird ships and robots without knowing where up and down are! Sseeeet! Now u can go. . . Come on now - run along, grandpa needs a nappy. . . Z-z-z. . . »
« By far the best game in the Descent series and one of the best games of all time. Descent is a rare treat that broke new grounds in DOS gaming in 1994. This game to this day remains compelling with 6 degrees of freedom, a corporate mercenary, space-themed backdrop, and some of the catchiest music that could turn any gamer into a badass alien killer. Superb level design and the end of level self-destruct sequences with timed planet escapes delivers the pulse-pounding thrill of arcade gaming that you don't find in the modern-day FPS. Descent has not lost its unique place in the history of games and deserves a place in your game library. »
