Cotton Reboot! est un remaster complet du jeu de tir aux sorcières Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams, originellement paru il y a trente ans, proposé depuis le 25 février 2021 sur PC, PlayStation 4 et Nintendo Switch par les développeurs de Rocket-Engine et édité par ININ Games et Beep Games. L'intrigue suit Cotton, une sorcière gloutonne indifférente à l'obscurité enveloppant le monde, qui part en quête de sa friandise préférée, le Willow, après avoir appris que vaincre les monstres lui en procurera. Cette réédition comprend trois modes de jeu : une émulation fidèle du mode original X68000 de 1993, un mode Arrange en 16:9 avec graphismes et personnages redessinés, ainsi qu'un mode Time Attack en ligne de deux ou cinq minutes. Un patch 1.01 est par ailleurs venu ajuster la notation des manettes, un menu de sortie, un réglage du mode d'affichage et la gestion de la vitesse pour les écrans au-delà de 60 Hz. Classé parmi les genres shooter, aventure et arcade, le titre affiche un score OpenCritic de 77 et une note agrégée de 79, pour un temps de complétion estimé à cinq heures et un prix de 37,99 euros. La presse a salué l'approche du remake, GameGrin évoquant un excellent jeu de tir et Shindig qualifiant Cotton Reboot de modèle pour les rééditions, tandis que certains joueurs regrettent les plantages de la version Steam au démarrage, préférant les éditions PS4 et Switch.

« I absolutely loved this game, it’s not just a great remake of a great shooter, but it’s genuinely one of the best shooters that I’ve played on a current-gen system. Beep has done a great job in making the series feel both fresh and nostalgic at the same time. It’s still a very short game, but if you like a good shooter and you’ll get replay value from chasing a high score then you absolutely must get this. »

It’s a bold reimagining of a cult classic, one that remains authentic to the cheeky, playful energy of the original game, but isn’t afraid to rework it to a significant degree and introduce an inventive new scoring system, creating an exciting new shmup outing in the process. But by including the original game, faithfully preserved and presented on equal footing, the remake never tries to replace the original. They’re different sides of the same coin, each serving a different purpose but providing the perfect complement to one another—and also laying the groundwork for when Cotton Rock ‘n’ Roll: Superlative Night Dreams lands later this year. »
« Cotton Reboot! breaks out the witch’s magic and makes a thirty-year-old game feel fresh and new. While not every update lands perfectly, and some content is worthy of a warning, this is an adorable shooter that looks and plays great. Here’s hoping Cotton can return with even more magic soon. »
« Cotton Reboot! is a fantastic re-imagining of a classic side-scrolling shooter. It looks and sounds better than ever and thanks to being able to switch between soundtracks, players can enjoy whichever audio experience they prefer. Including the original game’s X6800 port is a nice move and makes this a fantastic value for anyone looking to see what made the series so beloved in its heyday and still enjoy a redone experience too. There are a couple of issues with blind spots that haven’t been fully addressed, but the overall forgiving game design makes Cotton Reboot! a fantastic pickup for those who either already love side-scrolling shooters or for those who want to get into them, but just need something that’s more forgiving to fully enjoy the genre. »

Classic Cotton is cute and easy to pick up, but Arrange is a fast and wild experience that is definitely hard to master. There's some on-screen messiness in Arrange mode and the lack of gallery-style bonuses is a bummer, but this is still a must-play shoot 'em up for any fans of the genre. »

« If you like your older-school arcade shooting challenging, a bit on the cute side, and with an undeniable weird streak this refresh may catch your eye. While it generally looks and feels like it follows the normal arcade shooter rules, the places where it deviates will force you to play things a bit more aggressively and dangerously than the norm. « The people responsible at ININ Games and Rocket Engine have put a lot of effort into Cotton Reboot! Thus, the title is a lot of fun for newcomers and pros alike. The story is a nice addition. The controls are very easy to use and you can finish off your opponents in a flash. The graphics and sound are also good and round off the good overall impression. Unfortunately, the content is simply too little for this price. We would have liked to see more ideas here. »
