Chrono Trigger, un jeu de rôle (RPG) développé par Bird Studio et Square et publié par Square, est sorti le 11 mars 1995 sur Super Famicom, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Satellaview et Wii. Dans ce RPG japonais au combat au tour par tour, le jeune Crono doit voyager à travers le temps à l'aide d'un téléporteur défectueux pour secourir sa compagnie Marle et faire face à une force maléfique nommée Lavos destinée à détruire le monde, déclenchant ainsi une course contre la montre pour modifier le cours de l'histoire. L'intrigue commence en l'an 1000 par la rencontre entre Crono et la princesse Marle lors d'une foire, puis se déploie à travers plusieurs époques incluant 600, 2300, 65 000 000 avant notre ère et 12 000 avant notre ère, jusqu'à la Fin des temps, où le héros finit par affronter et vaincre Lavos avec l'aide de compagnons comme Lucca, Frog, Robo et Magus. La version ultime du titre, disponible avec un moteur Cocos2d et un DRM Steam au prix de 14,99 EUR, intègre des donjons inédits appelés Vortex dimensionnels et Sanctuaire oublié, un système de combat Active Time Battle v.2, des techniques combinables en duos ou trios, des graphismes et sons retravaillés supervisés par Yasunori Mitsuda, des commandes mises à jour et une sauvegarde automatique. La durée principale est estimée à 23 heures et à 42 heures pour une partie complétiste, avec une note agrégée de 92,26. La presse a salué l'œuvre comme un classique incontournable, GamesRadar+ jugeant cette édition ultime digne d'un score élevé, tandis que certains joueurs regrettent une jouabilité très répétitive malgré la direction artistique et la musique.
