Bravely Default, sorti le 5 décembre 2013 sur Nintendo 3DS, est un jeu d'aventure et de rôle développé par Square Enix Product Development Division 7 et Silicon Studio, et édité par Nintendo et Square Enix. Le titre suit l'histoire de Tiz, un modeste berger et unique survivant d'un événement cataclysmique, qui rejoint des compagnons fidèles pour restaurer l'équilibre du monde. Son système de combat se distingue des autres RPG par l'usage stratégique des commandes complémentaires Brave et Default : Brave permet d'augmenter le nombre d'actions d'un personnage lors d'un tour, tandis que Default permet de stocker des actions pour plus tard, poussant le joueur à réfléchir à sa stratégie à chaque affrontement. La presse a salué l'œuvre, Gameblog.fr y voyant la quintessence contemporaine du JRPG et USgamer évoquant un retour aux racines de Final Fantasy qualifié de magnifique, tandis que certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont trouvé le RPG fantastique mais ont regretté un dernier segment un peu trop répétitif. L'ensemble affiche une note moyenne de 79,64.

« Solid job system and epic music but I kept finding that the characters and story felt like "been there done that" it is the same final fantasy crystal plotline at first fine but very much nothing new. It feels grindy and I felt sudden difficulty spikes and samey-ness. The brave and default system seems less like a boost and break system from octopath, it just seems off. I really don't like the idea of repeating story beats and chapeters 5+ TIMES times to get to the final boss with relatively nothing or little changes to gameplay or story and refighting bosses and such. Seems like a slog why would anyone enjoy that? I respect what this game to a degree but i never felt like it came together fully. »
« Bravely Default es un RPG muy divertido y con muchísimo contenido. La historia es bonita e interesante, los personajes carismáticos y el sistema de combate tremendamente divertido. A nivel artístico y sonoro es precioso, y técnicamente funciona de maravilla. El sistema de trabajos es una maravilla, y da pie a muchas combinsciones diferentes. El único pero que le encuentro es que el planteamiento de la segunda parte del juego se me ha hecho algo pesada y repetitiva, a pesar de que el final me parece bueno. Se ha convertido en una de nis sagas favoritas dentro del género, y la considero totalmente recomendable si te gustan los RPG. »
« Honestly, this is a game both the critics and fans really got wrong. The only interesting thing about this game is the risk/reward system of the Bravery Mechanic. Everything else? You've seen before. Cliched characters, an uninteresting story, forgettable music, and way too many similarities to the superior Final Fantasy 3. I bought this off the hype everyone was giving it, and I'm honestly wondering if everyone got the wool pulled over their eyes aside from me. Play the DS remake/port of Final Fantasy 3 instead. Skip Bravely Default, and if somebody tells you its good, you'll know they're lying. »
« Bravely Default is a game that truly lives up to it's title because while it still feels like the same JRPG we have come to expect from Square Enix; it has the courage to give us a new battle system, multiplayer experiences, and a story that all feels so familiar, but experiments far too much to be considered the same thing. Bravely Default is truly a rebirth of what a JRPG can be, and what some imagination outside the box can do for any given genre that is getting a little too old for it's own good. With a well written story, an amazing score soundtrack by REVO, and a lot of ideas that tie up together so wonderfully Bravely Default is a must for anyone! »
