This mod updates adventure game classic The Longest Journey with HD visuals
If you were looking for an excuse to replay The Longest Journey, one of the best adventure games of all time, then look no further than The Longest Journey HD, a new mod with upscaled backgrounds and sprites, a redrawn user interface and other smaller visual improvements. Modder Faberman used a neural network to upscale the assets, and has done the same with in-game cutscenes, which you can download separately here. Judging by the screenshots of the mod it's definitely an improvement on the original, and environmental details are much easier to see.To run the mod you'll have to own the base game and also install game engine ResidualVM, because the original engine doesn't support modified assets. The full instructions are here.Faberman says they will continue to make minor changes to the mod: there's still "room for improvement", partly because the quality of the original assets aren't consistent. Since the 1.0 release they've put out a hotfix for one specific location in the game, for example.If you've never played The Longest Journey, which came out in 2000, then it's absolutely worth grabbing it on Steam or GOG during a sale so you can explore its two fascinating worlds, one fantasy, one a futuristic version of our own.

« Dopiero po 25 latach zrozumiałem dlaczego sąsiadka już nie chciała bym załatwiał jej dziecku gier. Po tym jak zakupiła nowy PC dla swojej ośmiolatki poleciłem #thelongestjourney bo gra miała bardzo dobre recenzje i wyglądała jak gra dala dzieci.Teraz przeszedłem i o dziwo w grze jest mowa o pornolach, lezbijkach, wiagrze itp. W dodatku teksty w stylu "ty suko" czy tym podobne nie są wyjątkiem.- totalny rozkrok pomiędzy dziecinną fabuła i dialogami, a przeklinaniem i 18+- dialogi w 90% były nagrywane na kiblu podczas zatwardzenia. Gordon przebił nawet polonizację Rosjan ze stadionu 10-lecia.- fabuła taka sobie. Dialogi to w większości bezsensowne pitololo w spowolnionym tempie. (parę razy usnąłem)- April robi takie długie przerwy między zdaniami przy opisie przedmiotu, że klikamy by zobaczyć coś nowego i bezpowrotnie ucinany jest tekst, który chce dopowiedzieć. Nie wiem co za nietryb wymyślił taką mechanikę.-zagadki są mało wyważone. Większość banalna. Niektóre kompletnie nieintuicyjne lub niezrozumiałe. (3 razy musiałem zaglądnąć do solucji)- grafika 3D zestarzała się bardzo. Lepiej się dziś ogląda pixele w grach Sierra.- brakuje mi jakiś fajnych komentarzy gdy robimy coś źle.- wybory dialogów nie mają w ogóle wpływu na fabułę. Na końcu gry wybrałem opcję by poddać się Gordonowi i niby jest animacja jak oddaje mu kamienie. I wiecie co ? W następnej lokacji gra to ignoruje i Gordon znowu prosi o te same kamienie.Wielu ludzi uznaję tą grę jako najlepszą przygodówkę. Ja bym jej do tego grona nie zaliczył »

« End of 2021. I got a decent hardware: RTX 2070 and Ryzen 5 3600 and I played this game without any additional HD mods or whatever exists out there, it was a raw experience. I thing this might be one of my favorite games. You can just feel the effort and love that went into it and I'm really, really grateful for this game. I don't know if this is a relevant information but I just wanted to note that I'm 20 so it's not some kind of nostalgia because my parents weren't even planning on having me when this game came out. So yeah, I want to say "Thank you" to the developers and the whole staff. I'm especially grateful for the voice acting team that did an amazing job and made the whole world feel more alive. Again, thank you. »
« I never really liked this game as much as everyone else did. Yes it does have an interesting - though not terribly original - story and at least some of the characters are also interesting. Especially April is excellent. Also, the backgrounds are quite nice to look at and the ending is especially good (and completely unexpected). But this is were the good stuff ends. The puzzles in this game are downright terrible. Arguably the worst in any adventure game and I am not only referring to the now infamous inflatable ducky puzzle. Puzzles require leaps of logic and can mostly really only be solved through trial and error. Also, so often you really have no idea what you should be doing or that there is a puzzle there in the first place. It gets slightly better as the game progresses, but not much really. Then there is the length. The Longest Journey is indeed Long! Too long!! Mostly because the story is extremely stretched-out. Moreover, everything in this game is slow: the character animations are slow, the walking is slow and much of the speaking is slow as well. This, combined with the puzzles, makes the game just a chore to play. Finally there is the character models. Boy do they look HIDEOUS! Both in-game as well as in the cut-scenes characters look like drugged-out alien zombies. April herself is actually the worst offender. She even looks bad on the box art. Cannot imagine how somebody thought this was acceptable, even back in 1999. So there you have it. While this review may sound overly negative I would still recommend this game, but only for it's story - and for the sequel(s) that follow it. »
