Description (IGDB)

Super Mario Sunshine is a Mario action-adventure 3D platformer. It follows Super Mario 64, and is the second 3D Mario platformer. Gameplay features a combination of action and puzzle solving, with numerous stages and multiple episodes to each stage, and plenty of hidden secrets and surprises. This game introduced many recurring characters and bosses in the Mario series, including Toadsworth, Bowser Jr., Petey Piranha, Gooper Blooper, Piantas, Nokis, Shadow Mario, and F.L.U.D.D. Super Mario Sunshine pays homage to Mario's Italian heritage and upbringing, with many of the locations in the game having Italian names and sometimes referencing Italian culture.

Histoire (IGDB)

Close your eyes and imagine…soothing sunshine accompanied by the sound of waves gently breaking on the shore. High above, seagulls turn lazy circles in a clear blue sky. This is Isle Delfino. Far from the hustle and bustle of the Mushroom Kingdom, this island resort glitters like a gem in the waters of a southern sea. Mario, Peach, and an entourage of Toads have come to Isle Delfino to relax and unwind. At least, that’s their plan…but when they arrive, they find things have gone horribly wrong... According to the island inhabitants, the person responsible for the mess has a round nose, a thick mustache, and a cap… What? But…that sounds like Mario!! The islanders are saying that Mario's mess has polluted the island and caused their energy source, the Shine Sprites, to vanish. Now the falsely accused Mario has promised to clean up the island, but...how? Never fear! FLUDD, the latest invention from Gadd Science, Inc., can help Mario tidy up the island, take on baddies, and lend a nozzle in all kinds of sticky situations. Can Mario clean the island, capture the villain, and clear his good name? It’s time for another Mario adventure to get started!

Nintendorks 100/100

« One of the best games on the Gamecube. Everything is fun, and there is never a dull moment. »

Total Video Games 100/100

« Combine the wonderfully fluid control system, level designs that ooze the 'one more go' appeal and the fact that it's Mario, and you've got one of the best games in a long time and certainly the GameCube's finest hour to date. [Import] »

Electric Playground 100/100

« The three-dimensional stability of the environment in Mario Sunshine is astonishing. At no time do the seams show. »

Nintendo Power 100/100

« Superb graphics, excellent music, clever layouts, funny cinema scenes and ingenious puzzles are among the many bright spots. [Sept 2002, p.160] »

PGNx Media 100/100

« The most impressive part of the graphics is the fact that mario can spot a coin or shine at the other side of the massive level. Becuse the game engine has amazing draw distance. It's really a sight to see. »

Computer and Video Games 100/100

« Step into the ultimate playground. When you're faced with a challenge or puzzle, you can be assured that the correct way to overcome it is also the most fun solution. »

GamePro 100/100

« A masterpiece of superior game design, infinite gameplay variety, creativity, and life-and it's got a water cannon…and a damn brilliant one at that. »

G4 TV 100/100

« The variety of moves at the player's disposal only makes the accessibility of the controls more impressive. Mario is immediately responsive to any command and makes flips, spins, wall jumps, and other complex maneuvers easier than you would think. »

« I could go on and on about this game. Between 64 and Galaxy, this game is the best of both worlds and also my favorite 3D Mario game. F.L.U.D.D helps the gameplay feel more immersive. It’s fun, and has those sick island vibes I love about Wii Sports Resort. This game holds a special place in my heart and combines challenging with fun gameplay that I could talk about endlessly. »

« Mario sunshine is a ok game but with awful flaws that make the game painful. Levels with no F.L.U.D.D is brutal. Mario is twice as more slippery then Mario 64 which is known to be slippery »

« Super Mario Sunshine is the ultimate proof that Nintendo hates its fans and wants us to spend our tropical vacations doing manual labor. Imagine buying a GameCube in 2002 expecting a sequel to Mario 64, only to be handed a pressurized garden hose and told to go scrub some graffiti off a wall. It’s not a video game; it’s a simulated community service sentence. The entire premise is a delusional fever dream where Mario is arrested for a crime he didn't commit by a legal system that clearly hasn't heard of DNA evidence or basic security **** gameplay is a buggy mess of slippery physics and "FLUDD" mechanics that feel like trying to aim a fire extinguisher while standing on a bar of soap. Every time you try to do a simple platforming jump, the camera decides to hide behind a palm tree or clip through a building, leaving you to fall into the abyss while Mario lets out a pathetic yelp. And don't even get me started on the Blue Coins. Whoever decided to hide 240 of those useless plastic chips around the island deserves to be trapped in the "**** Machine" level for eternity. »

« I seriously don't understand what people enjoy about this game. More power to them, of course, but I seriously don't get it. Maybe it is my fault for playing this after playing Super Mario Odyssey, but this game's controls are atrocious. F.L.U.D.D. always feels like it is compensating for how bad the controls are, rather than feeling like something built to complement them like Cappy did. The soundtrack is also mediocre by Mario standards, though there are songs I do enjoy (this is the main reason the score isn't as low as it could be). The setting is also kind of boring in my opinion and the voice acting is... certainly something... Overall, it's simply a bad game in my eyes. I 100% it and I do not recommend anyone does the same. »

« There is undeniably a lot of jank and you are going to tear your hair out if you try the hardest challenges. However the core platforming is still solid, the story is charming, the visuals are pleasing, and the OST is rich. »
