Mario Kart DS, publié le 14 novembre 2005 par Nintendo et développé par Nintendo EAD Software Development Group No.1, est un jeu de course arcade disponible sur Nintendo DS et Wii U. Il constitue la suite de la longue série de jeux de course née sur Super Nintendo.
Le titre propose seize nouveaux circuits ainsi que seize tracés issus des quatre précédents opus, répartis respectivement dans les Grands Prix Nitro et Rétro. Huit coureurs sont disponibles d'emblée, chacun pouvant choisir entre deux go-karts, tandis que d'autres personnages et véhicules peuvent être débloqués. Parmi les nouveaux objets figurent un calamar Blooper qui projette de l'encre sur les écrans des autres joueurs et un bonus Bullet Bill transformant le joueur en une balle géante et rapide se déplaçant en pilote automatique.
Avec une durée de parcours principal estimée à 4½ heures et un temps de complétion pour les joueurs acharnés atteignant 24 heures, le jeu affiche une note agrégée de 85,97.
Sur le plan critique, la presse a livré des appréciations nuancées. GameSpy a ainsi déclaré : « The online shortcomings are annoying, yes, but very minor, and they are more than made up for by the amazing single-player content and local WiFi gameplay. » NintendoWorldReport a écrit : « The best features of past Mario Kart games are back, and when combined with the new ones in Mario Kart DS, the end result is the most impressive game to ever h… ». Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont partagé leur enthousiasme en affirmant : « Speak cinema you have not played Mario kart until you have played 8 local multiplayer and your playing the amazing balloon battles best Mario kart ever », tandis qu'un autre a simplement signalé « [SPOILER ALERT: This review contains spoilers.] ».

« Get Wii and 8 Deluxe outta here! We have the true best Mario Kart right here (imo ofc). The tracks are well-designed, especially Waluigi Pinball, Airship Fortress and Delfino Square. You can drive on a tank or an excavator which is really funny. Sure, the character roster is very small compared to future entries like 8 Deluxe and World, but that’s ok! I like the fact that you can create your own custom emblem, it **** that it never came back. The soundtrack is a banger, one of the best in the series! And the best part of DS is the Mission Mode, especially the missions at the end of each level where you can face against bosses, something that World didn’t do with the P-Switches in Free Roam. I honestly think it’d be cool if we can fight bosses and unlock them for our roster instead of just getting a pointless sticker. But enough said, Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart game of all time! »
