Crash Team Racing, développé par Naughty Dog et édité par Sony Computer Entertainment, est un jeu de course sorti le 19 octobre 1999 sur PlayStation, PlayStation Portable et PlayStation 3. Ce jeu de karting met en scène les personnages de la série Crash Bandicoot dans des courses où le joueur choisit un personnage et s'affronte sur divers circuits. L'intrigue repose sur le défi lancé par l'alien égocentrique Nitros Oxide, qui menace de transformer la Terre en parking en béton si les héros perdent la compétition de course. Le mode histoire permet de sélectionner n'importe quel personnage pour disputer les courses principales et affronter le boss final Nitrous Oxide, avec sept adversaires contrôlés par l'IA par course et cinq courses de boss, tandis que des modes arcade jusqu'à quatre joueurs sont également disponibles. La durée de la histoire principale est estimée à environ cinq heures et demie, et le temps de complétion à vingt-deux heures et demie. La presse a salué la qualité du titre, GamePro relevant des contrôles quasi parfaits permettant de se concentrer sur la course et l'attaque des adversaires, et Games Domain évoquant des graphismes époustouflants et un gameplay parfait et accessible. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic qualifient le jeu de meilleur jeu de course de l'histoire et apprécient son mode histoire comme ses tournois, avec un large choix de personnages aux attributs propres. L'ensemble affiche une note agrégée de 83,92.

« Crash Team Racing is a super fun kart racer set in the colorful Crash Bandicoot world. The story revolves around a big race that decides the fate of the world, which adds some cool stakes to the fast-paced action. The boss races really stand out. They are tough and throw all kinds of crazy hazards at you, so you have to stay sharp. The Challenge Maps are a clever way to mix Battle mode arenas right into Adventure mode, keeping things fresh. Plus, the CTR Token races add a neat twist by making you hunt for letters on the tracks and explore every corner. Most tracks have shortcuts you can use to get ahead, which adds some strategy to the racing. There is a big cast of characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, so you can find one that fits your style. The rubber-banding, where the game keeps races close, is handled well. It keeps things competitive without being annoying. The only real downside is the rematch with Oxide at the end. It’s basically the same race as before with no new twists or extra challenge, which can feel a bit repetitive and takes away some of the excitement for the final showdown. Overall, Crash Team Racing is a blast with lots of variety, challenge, and fun characters. That Oxide rematch is a small bummer, but it’s still a top kart racer that’s definitely worth playing. »
