Ce titre constitue la suite de God of War III et poursuit la chronologie canonique de la série, tout en s'éloignant de la mythologie grecque pour explorer celle des dieux nordiques. Le joueur y incarne un Kratos vieilli et expérimenté, désormais installé en Norvège dans le royaume de Midgard avec son fils Atreus, plusieurs années après avoir vengé sa haine contre les dieux de l'Olympe. L'histoire débute au décès de Faye, seconde épouse de Kratos et mère d'Atreus, dont la dernière volonté était que ses cendres soient dispersées au plus haut sommet des neuf royaumes. Après des funérailles et une chasse où Atreus montre son incompétence, Kratos est agressé par un étranger aux pouvoirs divins insensible à la douleur, avant d'entamer le voyage avec son fils. Le jeu se présente comme une aventure sombre peuplée de créatures nordiques, mêlant rôle et combat rapproché brutal avec une caméra à la troisième personne, et propose sur PC des graphismes haute-fidélité en 4K, la compatibilité NVIDIA DLSS et Reflex, des commandes personnalisables et un support des écrans ultra-larges 21:9. Disponible sur PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 et PC, il affiche un temps de parcours d'environ neuf heures pour l'histoire principale et treize heures et demie pour une complétion intégrale, avec un moteur Kinetica et un prix de 49,99 euros. La presse a salué l'expérience via CGMagazine qui y voit l'une des productions les plus gratifiantes de la PlayStation 4, tandis que Destructoid espère voir la même équipe poursuivre le récit ; certains joueurs sur Metacritic et Steam qualifient le titre de chef-d'œuvre, louant le renouveau de l'histoire, la qualité du gameplay et le développement du personnage d'Atreus. L'accueil critique est au demeurant excellent, avec des scores agrégés de 93 sur Metacritic, 94 sur OpenCritic et 93,53 en note moyenne.

« That was amazing. If this were a movie, it would easily score at least a 9 on IMDb. The story was outstanding, the combat mechanics were incredibly satisfying, and the animation was absolutely gorgeous. My only criticism is that some of the climbing parts and fast-travel door animations felt a bit too long.(that is not a problem) Other than that, even with the limited variety of weapons, the game delivers a satisfying and engaging experience from beginning to end. Boss fights were great as well, but they didn't have the same sense of epicness as the Elden Beast fight in Elden Ring. I'd say they captured about 7 out of 10 of the epic feeling they were aiming for.Maybe I'll experience something even more epic in Ragnarök.(thats my own review :D) »

The soundtrack, the graphics, I loved it, it was my first console game I've ever played when he bought us the PS4, this resonated with me. »
« Beautiful game but boring gameplay with an ok story. The entire world of this game is a narrow strip of fighting the same monsters on repeat. Even in this narrow strip, you can't climb much of anything, can't jump into water, can't even jump period unless the screen tells you to at a dedicated jump area. The best part of this game is the kid's dialogue. Not only helpful but realistic and funny at times. »
