The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, développé par Nintendo EPD Production Group No. 3 et édité par Nintendo, est sorti le 3 mars 2017 sur Wii U et Nintendo Switch. Il s'agit d'un jeu d'action-aventure et de réflexion situé près de la fin de la chronologie de la série, dans lequel Link, réveillé après cent ans de sommeil passés à ne pas avoir réussi à stopper Calamity Ganon, part sauver la princesse Zelda et empêcher le monstre de détruire le monde depuis le château d'Hyrule où il est retenu. Le titre propose l'exploration du monde ouvert d'Hyrule, la collecte d'objets et la réalisation d'objectifs comme des énigmes et des quêtes secondaires, dans une structure non linéaire qui encourage l'expérimentation. Premier opus 3D en monde ouvert de la série, il permet à Link de se déplacer librement et d'utiliser armes et armures trouvées dans le monde pour divers bonus, sans imposer d'ordre précis pour les quêtes ou donjons, et de surmonter obstacles climatiques ou ennemis par la méthode appropriée. La presse a salué l'expérience, Edge Magazine évoquant des sentiments inconnus depuis vingt ans et Attack of the Fanboy le classant parmi les meilleurs jeux jamais créés, tandis que certains joueurs sur Metacritic louent un monde ouvert où l'on ne s'ennuie jamais ou considèrent le titre comme un travail impeccable de Nintendo. Le jeu affiche une note agrégée de 95,05 et une durée de 50 heures et demie pour l'histoire principale, étendue à 193 heures pour une complétion intégrale.
