Darksiders, développé par Vigil Games et édité par THQ, est sorti le 5 janvier 2010 sur Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 et PC. Ce jeu d'action et d'aventure s'inspire de l'Apocalypse et place le joueur dans la peau de l'un des quatre cavaliers de l'Apocalypse, coincé sur une Terre ravagée par la fin du monde, mêlant d'imposantes phases de combat à des séquences d'exploration. Le titre utilise le moteur Phoenix Engine et se décline également sur Linux, avec des genres mêlant aventure, jeu de rôle et hack 'n' slash. Trompé par les forces du mal qui l'ont amené à provoquer prématurément la fin du monde, le cavalier Guerre est accusé d'avoir enfreint la loi sacrée en déclenchant un conflit entre les Cieux et les Enfers ; après la défaite des hôtes divins, il est privé de ses pouvoirs par le Conseil Ardent mais obtient de retourner sur Terre pour découvrir la vérité et punir les responsables, traqué par les Anges et contraint de conclure des alliances avec les démons. Le joueur déchaîne la fureur de Guerre en combinant attaques brutales et capacités surnaturelles, parcourt les terres infestées de démons et les donjons de la Terre décimée, découvre des reliques anciennes pour améliorer ses armes et débloquer de nouvelles capacités, et affronte aussi bien les forces angéliques que les hordes démoniaques. Une partie principale demande environ 17 heures, contre 28 heures pour une approche complétionniste. Le jeu a reçu un score Metacritic de 83 et une note agrégée de 82,06. La presse a salué l'œuvre, Play Magazine évoquant « a pure gamer's game » et BigPond GameArena le présentant comme un indispensable de 2010, tandis que certains joueurs sur Metacritic regrettent un gameplay peu à leur goût malgré une ambiance prenante, et d'autres sur Steam y voient un classique ou notent un gameplay évolué pour l'époque avec différentes armes et mécaniques de déplacement.

« Brilliant, yet unpolished version of Darksiders 2. You got to love War and enjoy his style before you meet Death. War is brutal, more rash and work by instinct. Death always have one in **** seems to enjoy the kill, he's brutal, Death is doing it as his job and hardly put something in it. Great game, storyline, all the Darksiders games are masterpiece! »
