« The game is a lot of fun, even if the challenge level is out of this world. If you’ve been around for all 20 years of Contra, this is a must purchase. »

NintendoWorldReport 90/100

« The game is exceptional all around. Even the instruction manual pays homage to the classics and is well worth a peek for the ardent fan. Contra fans should buy this game immediately, and action fans in general should seriously consider picking it up. »

GamesRadar+ 90/100

« Contra 4 is definitely one of the best games available, in starting I got scared that this game was too hard and needs to practice a lot, but while I playing 2-3 times it seems too easy. I have completed many challenges in easy, moderate & hard levels. But I liked moderate level because it is easy too play with fun. The graphics & music are appreciable. The graphics are very smoothly created. The guitar sound at the end of stages gives you a good feeling of accomplishment and music is too much rocking. Actually the game is not difficult if we play with concentration and focus. I still enjoy playing this game. It's just so enjoyable. »

« One thing in this game is that you can't save the game. You either beat it, or you begin back at the start. The game is HARD, even with the extra lives and powered-up weapons in the easy mode. While good reflexes and skills will give you a leg up, practice and memorization are also important if you hope to keep enough lives to get to the next area. Expect hours and hours of play and practice to be able to get anywhere in the game. The game does make good use of both screen, you can move between them with the new vertical grappling hook, and threats come from all directions. It's a challenge simply to keep your eye on all the places that an enemy could be coming from. Other than the vertical-based gameplay though, there isn't any touch-screen implementation, and the graphics are nice but unspectacular. »

« I cannot say I grew up with contra since I was born into the 90s collect-a-thon games, even still this game is one of my favorite on the DS. This was my first contra game and I believe it is the best to start with because it gives you an easy mode (which is not easy the first time...). The game is difficult and probably the most difficult game on the DS, but it's the good kind of difficult. It rewards you for mastering it, and the controls are solid. You will need to master every side of them. After that, it's just run n gun. The fantastic part is that there is a 2 player mode as well, which non of the other similar games on the DS have. The graphics are smooth with a lot of attention to detail. I remember stopping and looking through a random broken window in one of the stages and finding a fully detailed office when they could've just added a grey background. »

« The frustrating and extreme difficulty is one of the main reasons i don't give this game a higher score. I understand that challenge should be part of videogames and it ads replay value, but when developers take difficulty and raise it to the extreme and insane level, there's not much to enjoy. Dying each minute is not funny at all, even if you are a skilled player and even if you finished most of the main contra games (like myself), even if you are a hardcore gamer you will suffer and you will find this game almost impossible. It would have been better if they let you choose more continues or at least a saving system. The easy mode is too easy and the normal mode is too hard. Other than extreme challenge, Contra 4 is great, the graphics and the music are very enjoyable and the gameplay is good and fluid, just like a true 2D sidescroller should be. The content of the game is very good and the whole 9 stages are long and insanely hard, and the replay value is awesome. The screen is not very precise, both screens are not well designed together and it ads confusion to the gameplay, and you can notice more of that in the vertical scrolling levels. The music and sound were very improved and the guitar sound at the end of stages gives you a good feeling of accomplishment. At the end of the day Contra 4 is one of the hardest games i have ever played in my life, but a very good one. »

« Too trial and telegraph even for Contra, but one playthrough unlocks the more accessible mission mode- a collection of short runs and challenges- and playable roms for both original NES titles. A hard to beat package, despite the main content's simon-says approach to difficulty. »
