Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, développé par Sledgehammer Games et Infinity Ward et publié par Activision, est un jeu de tir à la première personne sorti le 8 novembre 2011 sur PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC et Mac. Le titre, construit sur l'IW engine, mêle action, aventure et tactique, et propose une campagne située en 2016 où Captain Price et Nikolai évacuent un Soap mourant face aux forces de Makarov, tandis que la guerre entre la Russie et les États-Unis se poursuit et que le président russe est enlevé pour forcer l'accès à l'arsenal nucléaire. La durée principale est estimée à six heures et le complet à près de trente-huit heures et demie. La presse a salué un travail de raffinement et de respect de la formule, le Telegraph évoquant une « shining example of refinement and improvement », tandis que le Guardian notait que le moteur d'Infinity Ward n'était plus à la pointe sans remettre en cause la mise en scène. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic et Steam expriment une forte nostalgie et apprécient la fluidité de l'expérience, même si l'un d'eux regrette la baisse du multijoueur et un autre souligne la réduction des points de passage par rapport à MW2. Le jeu affiche un score Metacritic de 78 pour un prix de 39,99 euros.
