Undertale, développé principalement par tobyfox et édité par 8-4 et l'auteur lui-même, est paru le 15 septembre 2015. Ce RPG indépendant, mêlant aventure et réflexion, place le joueur dans la peau d'un enfant tombé dans l'Underground, monde où les monstres furent jadis bannis par les humains après une guerre. Le système de combat au tour par tour y intègre des éléments de puzzle et de bullet hell, et le jeu propose une narration riche en personnages et en humour, avec la particularité que tuer n'est pas nécessaire puisqu'il est possible de négocier avec les ennemis. Disponible sur PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch et Xbox One, ce titre construit sous GameMaker requiert environ sept heures pour l'histoire principale et une vingtaine d'heures en mode completionist, pour un prix de 9,99 euros.
L'accueil critique fut excellent, avec un score Metacritic de 92 et un agrégat OpenCritic de 93. The Jimquisition a salué la capacité du jeu à captiver comme peu de RPG l'avaient fait, tandis que PC Invasion l'a qualifié d'« entertaining, surprising, mind-breaking » et de travail inspirant. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont loué sa rupture avec les codes habituels du genre, bien que l'un ait regretté un gameplay limitant la note parfaite et une rejouabilité en demi-teinte, et des avis Steam positifs le décrivent comme un classique intemporel au fort contenu pour son prix.

« UNDERTALE was the best game I ever tried. Initially, I couldn't tell how good it was, because I've heard some bad rumors about the fandom. After that, I started looking around, and eventually I wanted o play it. I really enjoyed the first gameplay, but it was only by replaying it several times and noticing the individual details that I realised how beautiful it was. The story could seem kinda simple, but It is told in such an interesting way that it makes it extraordinary. The gameplay is fun, and the difficulty is quite balanced, although it can get easier or harder depending on the type of gameplay. The jewel in the crown, however, is the soundtrack, which is probably the best in the entire indie world and manages to compete, and perhaps even surpass, many other **** a technical level there is not much to say, since in this area it is very primitive, but this does not ruin the experience at all and is probably one of the many features that characterize this game, Along with many artistic choices, as well as well-orchestrated character management. »
