Celeste, développé par Extremely OK Games et édité par Maddy Makes Games, est sorti le 25 janvier 2018 sur PC, PlayStation 4, Mac, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Linux et Google Stadia. Ce jeu de plateforme indépendant à l'ambiance aventure, réalisé avec le Monocle Engine, plonge la jeune Madeline dans l'ascension d'une version fictive du mont Celeste où elle doit affronter ses démons intérieurs pour atteindre le sommet. Conçu comme un jeu de plateformes exigeant fait à la main par les créateurs de TowerFall, il propose des centaines de défis et des secrets à découvrir au fil d'une montagne composée de plus de 700 écrans, avec des commandes simples limitées au saut, au sprint aérien et à l'escalade, ainsi que des renaissances rapides. Le titre comprend une aventure solo portée par une histoire de découverte de soi, des chapitres Face B déblocables et une bande-son originale de plus de deux heures récompensée par une finale à l'IGF pour l'excellence en audio, pour un prix de 4,74 euros.
L'accueil critique a été très favorable, avec un score de 88 sur Metacritic et de 92 sur OpenCritic. IGN a qualifié Celeste de « surprise masterpiece » pour son platforming 2D parmi les meilleurs et plus difficiles, tandis que NintendoWorldReport a salué une expérience « gleefully rewarding and beautiful » malgré la difficulté de l'ascension. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont loué un plateformer quasi parfait tirant beaucoup de peu de mécaniques, et d'autres sur Steam ont décrit un équilibre réussi entre difficulté, histoire et répétabilité, tout en appréciant le pixel art et l'absence de frustration excessive.

« Nahezu perfekter Plattformer. Es ist erstaunlich, wie das Spiel so viel aus so wenigen Mechaniken so viel kreative Ideen rausholt. Jumping ist wirklich hart, aber noe unfair und das Gefühl ist mega, endlich eine besonder schwierige Stage zu schaffen. Musik ist toll und die Story is bewegend. Einzig kleines Manko: Einige der B und C Stages sind so abnormal schwer und grenzend an unfair, dass ich an ihnen irgendwann nur noch Frust empfand. »
