Five of the Best: Bags

Five of the Best is a weekly series about the bits of games we overlook, those poor old things. I'm talking about crowds, potions, mountains, hands - things we barely notice at the time but can recall years later because they're so important to the overall memory of the game. Now is the time to celebrate them - you and me both! I will share my memories but I'm just as eager to hear yours, so please share them in the comments below. We've had some great discussions in our other Five of the Best pieces. But now it satchelly time to talk about this week's topic... Read more

Torchlight currently free on Epic Store, Age of Wonders 3 free on Steam

It's Friday, which means the weekend, which means a few extra hours to be wrung of all their gaming worth (unless you have other plans, but that's totally okay too). However, should you find yourself inexplicably game-less as all that additional play time stretches ahead of you like an endless road 'neath a moonlight sky, you might like to know that Torchlight is currently free on the Epic Games Store, while Age of Wonders 3 is free on Steam.Torchlight is, of course, the first entry in (sadly now defunct) developer Runic Games' two-strong series of superb fantasy-themed action RPGs. Given that Runic was established by Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, founders of Blizzard North, and Mythos designer Travis Baldree, it's not a huge surprise that Torchlight wears its Diablo influences proudly on its sleeve. But its a wonderful example of the genre (and its sequel is even better, should you be interested), with Alec Meer's Eurogamer review saying, "it's the best Diablo-like since Diablo II, and a very real rival to the upcoming Diablo III. Even though there is nothing new or truly unique about Torchlight, nothing at all, that it so confidently and prettily takes the fight to Blizzard is an enormous compliment about how well put-together this is."Read more

Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)

GameShark 100/100

« Anyone that played the PC version should be right at home here. In fact, the game is basically the same all around, which, disappointingly, means that the XBLA version of the game also lacks co-op. This is the only real downside to Torchlight. »

Impulsegamer 97/100

« Torchlight is a highly enjoyable game, easy to get the hang of and the over all design elements are very pleasing. Torchlight by Runic Games is necessary game to have in the library of games for any true sword and sorcery fan. This game is dungeon crawling, sword and sorcery at its purest and fun form. »

GamingTrend 94/100

« This is one you will enjoy from start to finish, and it absolutely belongs in your 360 library. »

ZTGD 92/100

« Torchlight is what happens when developers with a passion for what they do come together. You can tell the guys and gals that made this game truly love the genre and know what makes it fun. »

1UP 91/100

« Even without multiplayer, Torchlight makes for a remarkably entertaining 10 to 15 hours, with plenty more custom content to come thanks to the powerful game editor TorchED, which you can download free of charge. »

Official Xbox Magazine 90/100

« Fortunately, what this exceptional new version of a PC favorite lacks in story, it more than makes up for with deep character customization, ever-more-powerful loot, and a dungeon-generation system that'll devour whole days of your life. [April 2011, p.76] »

GameFocus 90/100

« In the end, Torchlight is a home-run for any Action RPG fan! It's an easy "Buy" at 1200 MP and no fan of the genre should be without it. »

Joystiq 90/100

« Even without multiplayer, however, Torchlight on XBLA is as close as you can get to dungeon crawling nirvana for $15. Like its PC counterpart, it removes the cruft of the genre, allowing players to get right down to the loot-driven core with a minimum of fuss. And now, thanks to the streamlined controls, we get it all without the constant clacking of a mouse. »

QAOSbringer 6/10

« It was 2008 when Diablo 3 was first announced. That game was widely criticized for its "cartoonish" graphics. Torchlight was made to look similar to those Diablo 3 screenshots and was released in 2009. Until Diablo 3 came out in 2012, we only had Torchlight. This game is not a Diablo 3, Diablo 4, Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, or Dungeon Siege. We do not travel to different geographies on a large map. Rather, it looks a lot like Diablo 1. There is a dungeon consisting of 35 floors, and we are progressing on these floors. If you like Diablo 1, this will offer a very familiar taste. Offering 15-20 hours of gameplay for one character is an enjoyable experience. They have created an adventure that can be played and finished in no time. However, instead of continue developing the game for a long time, they chose to release Torchlight 2 in 2012. That's why playing this for repetitive content may seem meaningless today. Don't have high expectations and you will get some fun. 6: Average - Some may love and talk about it, but nothing more. »

jelikey 7/10

« I've been playing Torchlight on Steam, and it's good, clean, old school gamer fun. Of course it feels like Diablo, it's meant to. Heck, half the Diablo people are in here in one way or another. Love it though and I'll be grabbing it for Xbox as well. I only wish we could do multi-player. Can we? »

das-auge 8/10

« It is a fun yet time intensive and repetitive game. It took me about 20 hours to finish the story (i didn't go straight through, I got stuck and grinded 3 Levels up to come forth. I played the game on Linux and it works. That's a good thing few games offer. Some funny quests, some boring quests and too much useless loot in my opinion. Sounds strange, but the reason is, that I liked to run around and kill foes, but quickly i ran full of inventory and then it cost me lots of boring time to sort out all the stuff that was equal or worse than my equipped stuff. So in the end I had to sell most of the things, first losing time to compare the loot. And that ist not that easy for the big number of variables that make the value of the gear. A help is the fact that on mouse over you see an overview of the equivalent you are wearing, and that you can already sort out some part of the loot from highlighting, so you won't even pick it up. But if you do so, you loose the money you could sell it for. »

saffasy 7/10

« Best game I've ever played. Also the most frustrating game I have ever played. I am a newbie to metacrtic. However I have played over 266 hours in Torchlight. The good bits. Quick graphics. Will run on fairly old systems with half decent graphics card. Originally I had a Dual core with a nvidia 9500gt and it ran fine in medium settings. Gameplay is fantastic. Story a bit weak but you really don't care it is just a lot of fun to play. This coming from someone who has invested some serious time into Diablo 3. No grinding (D3). Also multiplayer was a joy. The bad bits Guts and mods oh my word. Word of the wise if you just want to play a game when you get home from work without any tinkering or messing about then do NOT buy Torchlight. I remember trying to connect to a friend at around 09:45pm come 12:30am we had still not connected and gave up playing. A few people will disagree, however if you want to play multiplayer with one or more friends and you want to try out different mods. It is a joke. Restarting mods and restarting the game are a very common occurrence. If you want to play single player with mods etc then fine 10/10. However this game I think should have released the synergies mod as a dlc and not as a community workshop ongoing project. Summary Torchlight 2 10/10 best game ever Torchlight 2 synergies/guts bells whistles etc. »

LosingStreak 8/10

« Diablo 2's spiritual successor. Unlike Diablo 3, Torchlight 2 doesn't around and focuses on the more engaging parts of being an action RPG deep character customization, addicting gameplay, tons of content to unlock and explore, and rewarding loot. »

greywolf00 9/10

« IMHO, far and away the best game in the Hack & Slash genre for non hardcore gamers (those who don't mind the imbalance/xp penalties from death in PoE). The music creates the same feel the score from Diablo 2. It does a great job of setting the mood. The game itself is much like D2, 3 skills trees per class and ability to assign points to attributes every level that impacts what gear you can use and when. The combat on normal absolutely nails down the fun of mowing through hordes of enemies with your special abilities. Elite difficulty is too much of a kite/grindfest for my tastes but other may enjoy it. The endgame is well handled imo. You have the choice of starting a NG+ or running maps. Maps have random bonuses/penalties to keep them interesting but they tend to be a little long for my tastes (3-4 different levels in the map). While I dislike Runic not including respec potions, that's easily fixed by tons of mods. Speaking of mods, this game has amazing support for them. There are several mods adding new classes and pets. There's stuff to tweak drop rates, skill point gains, add tiered passive skills, and almost anything else you can think of. For people who don't mind a higher mob spawn rate for more champion mobs, I highly recommend the Synergies mod. It changes a lot of the spawn/drop rates of vanilla while adding new gear, classes, focus specific enchanters, and a whole new zone with boss mobs for level 100+ characters. »

Rox22 8/10

« This game pretty much proves that Diablo would work on a console. Actually, it is almost identical to Diablo 1. Even the music seems identical. But I do know that TL does have some of the same people working on it and it was made as a homage to Diablo (or similar games) that came before it. So I thought it was brilliant. While it could have had a bit more depth and a less cliched story, it still holds up quite nicely. As a single player dungeon crawler I really can not fault it much. »

manmoths 8/10

« A nice entry into the ARPG world. Although missing some polish this is still a thoroughly enjoyable experience that carries high bang for buck and a very nice artistic style. »
