Evolution | Dev Diary #2
The blizzard begins to clear. Through the swirling snow, dark shapes emerge at speed. Then they break into a sprint. The new Revs.Their bladed fingers flex as they race across the frozen ground towards your position. Weapons open fire, desperate to stop them before they reach the line. But they keep coming, weaving through the storm with terrifying speed. As they close in, the sound of their claws cutting through the air becomes unmistakable. Then they hit.In seconds, human fighters are torn apart as the new Legion threat rips through the battlefield.Welcome to the Resistance. The last Dev Diary #1 looked at the story so far, and took a brief look at the upcoming DLC’s story. This Dev Diary is going to look a bit closer at the new melee and augmentation functionality, and give an early look at some of the new units in the game.RippersThe new Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance: Evolution DLC is nearing release and we wanted to give you a first look at the new Evolved Revs in action. The Rev 6.5 “Rippers” are deadly, fast moving, bladed Terminators. With a fast sprint and leap, they can tear through human lines, taking down unit after unit until they are stopped.Even vehicles are not safe, as they have the ability to leap aboard and break through armor with their razor sharp blades, smashing through to the crew inside. Here is the first look at the Rev 6.5 Rippers in action: Firepower will eventually halt the attack, but I have seen in the new DLC a unit of Rippers cut through 2 human units and a light platform emplacement before they were destroyed by a Bradley tank (manned by good old Big Bob!). Augmented HumansTo counteract the new Rev 6.5 Rippers, the Resistance gains new technology allowing them to augment human troops, as seen with Grace in the Terminator: Dark Fate movie. This gives increased melee attack, speed and armor, allowing them to face off with Terminator units, even the Rev 6.5’s. Augmentation is applied through a Training Ability in the army management screen, where units ‘Volunteer’ to be augmented. This removes existing Training Abilities, but heavily improves the unit's stats. It also unlocks additional ‘Augmentation Kits’ slots to customize each augmented unit. For example, add an additional Stamina Augmentation Kit for further increased armor and the ability to carry nearly double ammunition. Or a Crew Augmentation Kit, to allow further increased vehicle speed and control. Weapons and unit type skills are still retained, so an Augmented Sniper unit is still a sniper unit. We hope this gives you a great deal of customisation options, with different units using different weapons having varying augmentation set ups. Here is an example of an Augmented unit attacking a Rev 1 Homonculi. As you can see, they have an initial ‘charge’ ability (similar to the Rev 6’s) to charge them into melee.Flame TankTo help Alex Church and the Resistance, a new tank is available during the campaign, the Leopard C2A1, a Canadian Main Battle Tank, carrying a large Flamethrower and Plasma M20. The Flamethrower is specifically useful against humans (of which you must fight in the new campaign), whilst the Plasma M20 is particularly useful against any vehicles. Here it is in action.Where is the DLC?Probably the most asked question about the new DLC is, “When is it being released?”A lot of players have been asking about the release date, having been delayed a couple of times from when it was originally announced. I have personally said Q2 2026 for the past few months, aiming for the end of June. However, we are going to miss that slightly, and unfortunately have to push into early Q3, around July or August. We are literally polishing the missions at the moment, but with the polish and the voice over work that is underway, getting back some of the original actors from the early game, and building in some beta testing time, has meant another slight delay.I know this may upset some people who were expecting it in June, but we are making sure that the update is polished and fun. (And, if you watch out for Beta announcements over the next couple of weeks, you may get access to play slightly earlier too). Community QuestionsAs we often do with the dev diaries, we like to get questions from the player community, and over on the Official Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance discord channel of which I will try to answer. So, a number of questions have been asked. Here goes: From NelsonWhat are the things you are most excited about seeing players react to? What has you most concerned?Mark:Well, I am very excited about the new Rev melee functionality. The new DLC was built around this new unit type and new melee functionality and improvement, both in story and functionality. I was blown away seeing the Revs leaping onto a moving vehicle and begin ripping it apart. The initial plan wasn’t to have them attacking vehicles, but I remember when the team mentioned “oh, and we may look to get them leaping onto and attacking vehicles, ripping them apart”, I was like “Oh, yes please, if you can, that would look awesome!”My main concern as always is player expectation. I see player comments such as “I hope there is more than 3 - 4 days worth of play”. The new DLC is comparable to the “We Are Legion” DLC released earlier in length, with a similar amount of missions. Whenever you release a new game or DLC, you just hope players enjoy it. From DAMIRIs there going to be a DLC in which the integrators will get a flying vehicle/unitBe it a advanced heli or a legions HK aerial they took/hacked and modified for their useMark: Well, the Integrators are quite prevalent and playable in the new Evolution DLC allowing the player to control them (with the return of Silas from We Are Legion DLC!). But there is no additional Integrator aerial unit, but a great idea that will be put to the team for future DLC. I know players cry out for more flying units. From NikitaWill the upgrade / Promotion system be further expanded on? Mark:As I mentioned above, there is now another level of ability upgrades with augmentations available. I believe that a unit needs to have upgraded to at least an Expert to have the option of augmentation too. From Xul:Can the augmented humans board and rip apart vehicles?Mark: No, augmented people have weapons. They can only deal with vehicles with these weapons. Is there going to be a hand-held flamethrower usable by infantry, or is it just mounted on vehicles?Mark:The flamethrower will be found on only one tank—the Leopard. It's a unique weapon, and like the railgun in the original campaign, it will be in very limited supply. Does augmenting humans result in a higher supply upkeep cost? As in the movie I think they needed to eat a lot more than regular humans.Mark: Yes, they do. Roughly double the cost, to mirror the improved functionality these augmented units provide. From sdasd: Will the new units be back-ported to any of the older content? especially uprisingMark: Not at release. The issue is, retro-fitting older content with new content means a total re-work and re-balance of that older content, with a huge chance of breaking what has been released. Our plan is in the near future, there will be some ‘cross over’ content released that will incorporate all the new updated functionality and new units. From NaturalIdiot97: Will the augmented soldiers receive specialised weapons similar to what we see in the movie?Mark:No, they retain the weaponry that they had at the time, and can be swapped out as normal too.I was just playing the new DLC, and was trying out some new combinations, with an augmented unit deploying smoke, and then running through the smoke into melee. It was quite brutal. How will the augmented soldiers interact with vehicles? Will there be any special effects or requirements?Mark:It is possible to provide additional vehicle augmentation skills, to increase their usage of vehicles. How will the events of the next dlc influence the progression/direction of the storyMark: There is an on-going story being told, using characters from the main game and earlier DLC’s. We want to keep everything tied together as we move forward too. So, we will be seeing characters move into later DLC’s too. Will we have any visitors from other overseas countries trying to aid in the battle against the machinesMark: Not yet. I would like to say a big thanks to all the community that provided questions for this dev diary. Questions are always being asked (and usually answered) on the official discord channel so do check it out if you want to ask me something directly. We also continually read all Steam Discussion comments and try to answer where possible. "The blizzard has cleared, and the snow is stained with the blood of fallen humans. The Rippers have moved on through the lines, causing mayhem and death on their path. It is time to come forward and volunteer for augmentation soldier. You are the future, the evolution of this Resistance against the machine threat. For the Resistance!!"
Evolution | Dev Diary #1
With the new Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance: Evolution DLC nearing release, and with it continuing the story of humanity's fight against the Machines, against Legion, we wanted to take you back to the battlefield to refresh your memory of the story so far. The story so far \The DLC’s that have been released have continued the story on from what was set in the original base game. The base game followed Lieutenant Alex Church from his first command within the Founders, fighting back against Legion, finding himself and his force adrift in the wastelands, and finding allies in the form of the Movement, the civilian militia, that he managed to bring together into a Resistance force. Towards the end of the campaign, a giant Mech, using unknown digital technology was destroyed and that technology, named ‘The Digital Storm’, became a winning tool in the final battle against legion at Galverston, where Legion technology development, including creating human-skinned infiltrator Terminators, was halted, and some Legion technology taken by the Founders. The first DLC, We Are Legion saw the war from the Machines point of view, as Legion identified the ‘Digital Storm’ weapon that had been used towards the end of the base game, and it tried to find out about, and capture that technology. Splitting off ‘Units’ from itself, we followed Unit 1462 as it made contact with the Integrators, and used Acolyte Silas to help it find out about Digital Storm.Legion's path met Alex Church and his Resistance, and later attacked the core of the Founders forces, to discover and capture Digital Storm. It found that Digital Storm was a sentient AI that the Founders had ‘discovered’, from an earlier time in the 90’s, but utilized some ‘strange future code’ that Silas couldn’t understand. We Are Legion ends with Unit 1462 being infected with the Digital Storm’s code base, and after a confrontation with Legion itself, Unit 1462 is left for dead, only to be ‘discovered’ and re-booted by Elder Silas himself. The last DLC, Uprising, we returned to the fight of the Resistance as Alex Church and a portion of the Resistance forces are ‘searching in the North’ for more humans to join the Resistance. As the structure of Uprising is more ‘fluid’ and open, it is up to each individual player what the outcome of that campaign was, but pushing back the Machine hordes was the goal. The Story Continues \And so we move North and come to the new Evolution DLC. This continues the story set out in the earlier DLC’s \.The new campaign DLC continues the story of Alex Church, the Integrator Silas and the Legion Unit 1462 and their fights against Legion, or for their other goals. When a large Legion mining and operation in Canada forces an Integrator army, led by Silas to seek out the support of the only force that he knows that could help them destroy these operations, Alex Church and his Resistance.Entering the Legion Mining Facility What we witness is an uneasy alliance, Integrators, The Resistance and Unit 1462, together to defeat a common threat, but all with their own individual goals and needs that may not sit well with the other allies. This plays out in the snowy battlefields of the North, from Central New York to the Canadian wilderness.Integrators defend a parking lot near Niagara Falls Returning to the story are some of the key players. Alex Church is returning, leading the Resistance. With him comes some familiar faces from the original game. Big Bob & Sergeant Calderon return with their heavy tanks and their unique banter, as well as Sergeant Mason. Evolution of Melee AttacksThe new campaign story centers on the creation of the next Revs, a process that humanity is trying to stop. These evolved Rev 6’s do not carry weapons, but now sport bladed claws and increased speed. If one of the new Rev 6.5’s reaches an infantryman and leaps towards them, the infantryman has 0% chance of survival, but will be ripped to shreds. Survival depends on killing the Rev before its final attack. An augmented soldier, using technology found during the Galveston fight back, can survive hand to hand fighting with this new breed of Rev. In fact, using the new augmented technology, it has a good chance of killing the attacking Rev, such is the strength of the new augmented humans. There have even been some worrying battle reports of the new Rev’s attacking vehicles. Leaping onto vehicles and ripping off armor, until either the vehicle is disabled or the Rev destroyed. Although reported, we do not have any footage to correlate whether this is just rumours!Questions from the community:The Official Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance Discord channel has a discussion specifically to ask questions about the game. Here are some that were not answered in the channel. From Cameron Phillips:What can we expect in terms of character development and evolution of our main hero in this new story chapter? Will there be any interesting choices or moral dilemmas to experience, similar to the ones presented in the original campaign? Anything you can share about the high-level plans for the characters' future journey - without any major spoilers? Thank you.Mark:Well, our ‘main hero’, Alex Church, is not necessarily the main protagonist in the new Campaign. As mentioned above, the Integrators and Unit 1462 are also front and center when it comes to the story. Each has their own goal and so it is interesting to see where each one may lead the story. From Sky:I actually have a question and it's a question that has been asked in the past but I'm curious if anything has changed, are there any plans or considerations going forwards towards introducing a map editor or mission maker possibly both combined into one.Mark: Hopefully, yes. But I can’t give any more information on that just now. From Paul LefebvreWill Sergeant Mason’s first name be revealed in the dlc?Mark:No. (isn’t his first name Sergeant?)From RaskolnikovMark, will we have a new giant robot in this DLC?Mark:Yes, and no! More information will be released in another dev diary before the release of the Evolution DLC. See you on the battlefield soldier!

Avis des critiques et joueurs
Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)
« Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance is an intense and elaborate strategic game on par with other deep military simulations. »
« Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance has a good real-time strategy core that is augmented by the mission design and the army management elements. The campaign features interesting situations and complex battles. The tactical pause makes it all accessible even for players who aren’t long-term fans of the RTS genre. The story and presentation do not match the game’s mechanics. Some secondary objectives and narrative choices are unclear until players actually interact with them. But Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance uses the franchise well and delivers engaging battles. »
« The unexpected complexity of Terminator Dark Fate Defiance proves to be a key element in restoring dignity to the saga from which it draws inspiration, traditionally unlucky in its video game adaptations. The tie-in proposed by Slitherine stands out as an engaging and challenging adventure, confronting us with a substantial challenge and presenting hordes of well-armored and equipped enemies. Despite some obvious flaws, the large-scale management phases and the ability to influence the progress of the game based on the choices made give the game a surprising strategic depth. It is a production which, despite being small in size, stands out for its almost role-playing structure, without forgetting, and indeed enhancing, its strategic roots. The complexity of the battles should not discourage newbies, considering the presence of the "Story Mode" difficulty, while fans of the saga and real-time strategy games should undoubtedly give this title a chance, certainly the best videogame transposition of the franchise in years to this part. »
« Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is one of the best Terminator experience to date. One of the few games to offer a faithful experience to the series. »
« Fast-paced real-time strategy with a good Terminator atmosphere, lots of micromanagement and dramatic battles. Controls sometimes too fiddly. »
« Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance is overall a good modern-style RTS (so no resource gathering or base building) with a presentation that, considering budget restraints, can be very satisfying despite some drops in framerate. However, be warned that the campaign can be fairly frustrating even at medium difficulty. »
« Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance is a strange game that doesn’t seem like it would be all that fun at a cursory glance. Dig deeper, however, and you’ll find that all of its smaller systems mingle together in a way that brings about one of the more fun and unique real-time strategy games out there. »
« Finally, a game that deserves the love of Terminator's fans. »
Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)
« Awesome strategy game. I really like the setting, modern and guerrilla warfare mixed with in a post-apocalyptic world. Aesthetically, it is pleasing and clear (missing HDR support). Gameplay-wise, I really like the units roster, its abilities/upgrades and the synergies between them. I thoroughly enjoy the resource-management throughout the campaign. From obtaining as much loot as possible from the battles you fight to earn money, to managing your army and setups as well as buying improvements and planning ahead. You need to keep consumed supplies in check as growing your army is not free, and you need to consider travel requirements. The duality between combat and campaign management reminded me of XCOM, which is quite a praise. I think it is really well executed within its AA scope. A top strategy RTS game, among my favourites. »
« If you expect this game to be similar to World in Conflict from Massive Entertainment you are going to be vastly disappointed. I did that mistake and many others it's not a bad game but it's a matter of taste. The mission design is similar to solving puzzles you have to do exactly what the game expects you to do or else you will lose there is no real freedom of strategic choices. Units with RPG mechanics so it's like you throw a dice every time they open fire if you are in luck and the dice has a positive number then they will hit their target. Your troops in this game just love to throw their limited bullets like idiots and without doing any damage to the opponent so you have to constantly babysit them and tell them exactly of what they have to hit. There are very limited troops and resources at your disposal in every mission so you have to be very careful of not losing them. »
« This would have been a perfect 10 if not the lack of some quality of life implementation. The idea is great, the gameplay is very engaging, fun, well thought out, but here are the reasons I must substract 2 points from a perfect 10: - severe lack of tooltips! took me a while to understand that the weapons rankings is not your typical ranking like legendary, rare etc, but the weapon colors rather represent the type of weapon, aka the slot of the unit/vehicle on which it fits. Also, when picking up weapons from the ground, you don't get a full tooltip for the ground weapon, so you need to look it up theoretically on their encyclopedia, which is also lacking! So you have to look it online. This can come as a plus, but some weapons for the same vehicle/unit slot can be better vs infantry, others better vs vehicles, other mixed, which is actually a positive as that would mean that generally there aren't bad weapons and good weapons, you need to plan what that specific slot should be used for- but it would help to see all that on tootips also for weapons on the ground!! - lack of key combination for: * selecting all units at once * selecting all vehicles at once * selecting all infantry at once - grouping of units: there is support for grouping units with the classic ctrl + [0-9] keys combinations, but! there's a but: when you group some units under a control, they are not grouped on the units preview pane on the UI, they are listed in the same order as before. Which means that once you group some units in a control, it's not so easy to preview/select units which are not yet under a ctrl+n group. I would have loved to have something similar with eg the way rome 2 and most total war series do the grouping part, just separate the grouped units from the rest. - units highlight: * selected units on the units preview pane is not very well highlighted, so it's not so easy to see from the list of units which ones you currently have selected * the minimap: oh God the minimap is not great at all, many missions have neutral factions, your troops are visible on some sort of green, the neutral ones on some sort of blue, but they look so similar that it s sooo hard to discern your troops from the neutral ones! - troops driving the vehicle: there is absolutely no indication on the units preview pane who the funk is driving the vehicles! in this game, most unit types can drive regular vehicles .Many vehicles can transport other troops as well. You can see the transported troops whithin the vehicle on the units preview pane, but you cannot see what unit is driving! which can be a real nuisance, as eg for vehicles you bring to front you can assign dedicated tank/vehicle drivers, but for vehicles aquired during missions you mostly assign units like rangers/snipers etc as drivers, and you kinda need to know where to find them during fights! To quote Angry Joe, this game deservers a badass seal of approval - but it needs abit of work on the QOL part. »
« The bug fixes are out the game is amazing and the story is god tier. Everyone who expects a man of war will be disappointed this is not a man of war this is Terminator dark defience sit down whit a clean wiew and the story is just unbeatable »
« 1) Micromanagement is crazy in this game you have been warned If you are not fan of micromanagement don't even bother buying this 2) Enemy factions getting constant reinforcements just to make the game feel "competitive" such a cheap and lame game design 3) Your units don't know how to shoot in this game they spend all their bullets on targets with little accuracy feels like you have to command a group of useless people and you expect with some luck to hit their targets 3) Supply, manage, repeat again and again and again so tired of having to babysit every unit 4) It's a niche title trying to be hard for the sake of feeling hard developers want to please Dark souls fanboys. I prefer playing real RTS games »
« To be honest I would prefer a Command and Conquer strategy game in the Terminator universe and not a weird hardcore survival game with shooting mechanics based on luck and having to constant micromanage all my units, There are so many limitations in the gameplay of this game despite some good ideas. Game expects from you to have 20 hands be everywhere at the same time and give orders to every single unit plus having to fight enemy units coming from everywhere and having to look out for fuel and supplies. Sorry this is not exactly my cup of tea of what i call fun. Suppressing does not even exist in this game the enemies will always be accurate, Using smoke for cover is actually useless because it also makes your units inaccurate against enemy targets, This game was made for a small clique of try-hards that love save scumming and micromanaging it's not for the normal strategy players it feels like a slog. It's a shame could had been a lot more fun »
« I had a great time with this game. It was difficult sometimes annoying, but it was able to hit that sweet spot for me. I really like the idea of mil sim game mixed with the science fiction. Definitely there are some issues that need to be patched. Related to game performence. »
« Very bad game. The story is okay, but everything else is very bad - camera, gameplay, balance and skulldugger »
