Sonic Riders is the fourth racing game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, preceded by Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic R. The game was released to start off the 15th anniversary of the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. For a short while, the Microsoft Xbox version of the game was released with a free Sonic X DVD. This game introduces five new playable characters, the Babylon Rogues and the E-10000 series. A sequel to Sonic Riders, entitled Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, was released in 2008 for the Wii and PlayStation 2, followed by the Kinect-required game Sonic Free Riders for the Xbox 360 in 2010. Worth Playing 82/100

« Just don't believe the hate. »

TotalPlayStation 80/100

« I swung back and forth so many times on Riders' gameplay that I nearly had an emotional breakdown. The game can seem impossibly difficult until you learn all the shortcuts and master every turn. If that's your cuppa tea, get all over it. If not, rent it. »

AceGamez 80/100

« Sonic Riders doesn't boast too many tracks, nor does it have an online mode, which is a shame, but a bit of unique futuristic racing with familiar faces is what I'm after these days, and Sonic Riders delivers on that front hands down. »

BonusStage 78/100

« An engaging arcade racing game that brings along a host of unique new gameplay twists and turns that distinguish it from the score of other similar titles. »

Cheat Code Central 76/100

« It's certainly not perfect, but it is definitely playable and enjoyable. Again, my biggest complaint is the pits...pitstop that is. At any rate it's a far site better than the recently released Shadow the Hedgehog game. »

Next Level Gaming 73/100

« The biggest problem is that there is no online gameplay. And for the more experienced and hardcore adult gamer, this game will get boring very quick[ly]. »

GameZone 70/100

« The series’ most notable feature – unparalleled speed – was somehow lost on this installment. Frustration prevails, an element I hope is excluded from all future Sonic releases. »

Play Magazine 70/100

« SR is packed with mostly quirky nuances that take time(and a little frustration)to master, often resulting in races being determined by track memorization as much as mastery of your particular racer's strength's and weaknesses as they pertain to each wild ride. [Apr 2006, p.63] »

SonicSweeps79 8/10

« Sonic Riders is a daring and successful departure from the traditional kart-racing formula, trading wheels for gravity-defying "Extreme Gear." By blending the high-speed DNA of the franchise with the energy of early 2000s extreme sports, Sega created a racer that feels distinctly unique. The game’s greatest strength lies in its deep, skill-based mechanics—specifically the "Air" management system. Having to balance your fuel levels by performing tricks and catching the turbulence of opponents adds a layer of strategy that rewards precision and forward thinking, setting it apart from more casual racers.  The presentation is a masterclass in style, leaning heavily into a futuristic, techno-industrial aesthetic that feels like a spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio. The character designs for the Babylon Rogues—Jet, Wave, and Storm—are some of the most inspired additions to the series' cast, providing a perfect antagonistic foil to Team Sonic. This style extends to the vibrant, multi-layered track designs, where branching paths based on character types (Speed, Fly, and Power) ensure that every lap feels fresh and rewards exploration. The "Extreme Gear" system in Sonic Riders is a revelation for anyone tired of the sluggish, item-dependent pacing found in franchises like Mario Kart. While that series often feels like a slow-motion stroll through a cartoon daycare where victory is handed out by a random number generator, Sonic Riders demands actual skill, reflexes, and a mastery of its deep air-management mechanics. It swaps out the "baby's first racer" training wheels for a high-octane, stylish experience that respects the player's intelligence. »

« Its cool but a little janky. I felt like the jump timing on ramps was inconsistent »

Ragom 9/10

« This is the game that should be used as base to any sonic racing game going forward, shame we got stuck with the all star racing formula(and no crosswords may have the extreme gear but its gameplay is more pushed to all stars racing either way), but i hope this game gets remade in the exact way the gameplay is, only adding a few more stuff like characters and stages, because as far as gameplay goes, when you get the rhythm of it, its near perfection »

Ghost410 9/10

« Realmente é um jogo voltando para os fãs mais hardcores, mas se pegarem o jeito dos controles iram perceber que o jogo se tornará viciante e não é atoa que a comunidade mantém o jogo vivo até hoje com melhorias e modo online. »

Rikal123 10/10

« It's a game with gameplay that's a little complicated for beginners, but otherwise the game is really cool. »

OST: Muito Boa >PS2: Notas: Nota do PS2: 9/10 Nota Geral: 9/10 »

« I really like this it's not just a sonic game no it's a special mix of nostalgia and great moments and now playing it with the same enjoyment as I used to feel as kid The gameplay is great for it's time but hard to understand at the beginning the story is not that match but omg the excitement when you want to win is crazy I really appreciate my father for bringing it to me as a gift when I was a kid ️ »

weskergamer 7/10

« This game is really fun. It has a lot of content so you can spend a lot of time just playing different stuff. The music is very good and the art style is stunning. It is a shame that at least in the PS2 version that i played, the controls are not very good and the gameplay sometimes fall short. We really need a new game from this series or at least a remake of this game but fixing all the gameplay issues it had »
