Shovel Knight, développé et publié par Yacht Club Games, est sorti le 26 juin 2014 sur de nombreuses plateformes, parmi lesquelles on compte la PlayStation 3, le PC, la PlayStation 4, le Mac, la Nintendo Switch, la Xbox One, la Wii U, la Nintendo 3DS, Linux et la PlayStation Vita. Ce jeu d’action-aventure indépendant au genre plateforme propose une direction artistique soignée rendant hommage à l’ère des jeux 8-bits, tout en intégrant des touches de modernité permises par les machines actuelles, comme des animations détaillées et des arrière-plans mobiles sur plusieurs niveaux. Le joueur incarne Shovel Knight, un petit chevalier armé d’une épelle multifonction, parti vaincre la maléfique Enchanteresse et retrouver sa bien-aimée, tout en affrontant les huit chevaliers de l’Ordre des Sans Quartier. Le titre offre une carte du monde laissant choisir l’ordre de la quête, un mode nouvelle partie+, un mode coopératif, un mode défi et la possibilité d’échanger les corps des personnages, avec une musique composée par Jake « Virt » Kaufman et un titre additionnel de Manami Matsumae.
Disponible au prix de 13,99 euros, Shovel Knight a reçu une note moyenne agrégée de 87,35. La presse a salué l’hommage appuyé à l’ère de la NES, USgamer évoquant une réalisation graphique, ludique et sonore « pitch-perfect » pour un jeu de cette console, tandis que ZTGD y a vu le moyen de retrouver le sentiment des classiques d’autrefois. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic ont apprécié un hommage aux NES classics doté de mécaniques plus raffinées et d’un nouveau récit inspiré des meilleurs jeux difficiles du passé, et un avis positif sur Steam résume l’expérience par la formule « La sainte pelle ! ».
