its ok

30 year old JRPG Romancing SaGa 2 finally gets its due with a new, full remake
Back before the Final Fantasy and Square Enix developers fused together to become Square Enix, series creator Square (as they were at the time) also brought us another essential JRPG series, the most popular of which was 1993's Romancing SaGa 2. A fundamental early pillar of the genre, its nonlinear structure and broad class selection made it a key influence on the industry, but it didn't make it to a worldwide launch until 2016. Now, its full-scale remake has finally arrived, modernizing it for a 2024 audience, and it's already proving a hit on Steam. Read the rest of the story... Critiques de la Presse (Metacritic)
« Allowing you to pick your own heir to the throne and affect direct change across a whole country is impressive, making the story feel like its your own. This is emotionally strengthened by other elements like permadeath. While it can be frustrating to play at times, it is absolutely worth experiencing Romancing SaGa 2; a truly hidden gem in the Square Enix library. »
« This is one of the more unheralded Super Nintendo JRPGs, but the update is of a high quality, and while I don’t think it’s a classic example of the genre by any means, it is still a very enjoyable game. A clean, enjoyable combat system, plenty of enemies to fight, and a bit of exploration and puzzle solving on the side; this is the kind of classic JRPG experience that I’ll never get tired of. »
« A game that we recommend to jrpg enthusiasts who do not fear experiences of gameplay sui generis. »
« With appropriate updates and feelings of nostalgia, Romancing SaGa 2 feels like a game from the 1990s, but looks a lot more polished. »
« Romancing SaGa 2 has a certain old school charm that invites any old school RPG fan to give it a shot. I don’t think it’s as polished as Square Enix’s other titles that came out during this ’90s era, but it’s something worth investing in if you want a different take on the standard RPG formula. It’s not for everybody, but Romancing SaGa has enough good qualities to give it a go if you’ve never played it before. »
« Romancing SaGa 2 is an alluring blend of esoteric and impenetrable that is as vexing as it is fascinating. »
« Romancing SaGa 2 is really intriguing new JRPG. The combat system has a great sense of depth thanks to its distinctive take on levelling, the inclusion of formations and how the player is held accountable for each party member. The kingdom management aspects also provide a greater sense of player agency and helps set it apart from conventional role-playing games. Due to this design, the story and character development – including the dialogue throughout – aren’t quite as refined as other Square Enix titles. Regardless, the entire concept has aged surprisingly well – even by modern standards. »
« Romancing SaGa 2 makes its debut in EU after the '93 release with new HD graphics, but the port is the same we saw on mobile devices. »
« It's worth playing. Romancing saga2 was released 30 years ago, but still the system is uniq. I played it recently, but I was surprised. definitely, one of the best JRPG! »
« It’sthe best JRPG ever. I know Final fantasy or dragon quest were great, but Romancing saga2 is masterpiece. »
« worth it and glad to play this game again. so much memories and nostalgia within this spin off game in the series. »
« Its inheritance system is extremely well implemented and makes for fun replays, combined with its complex questing system allowing for various approaches and outcomes. I, for one, am surprised to see that it took 23 years to localize it. »
« Without a doubt one of the most astonishingly well-made games. Its polish, gameplay-wise, is unparalleled. »
« easily the best JRPG of the SNES era. What an underrated gem. Too bad reviewers seem to not know what makes video games art, yet. »
« It's always funny to see people call Chrono Trigger the best JRPG on the SFC/SNES when that's no true in the slightest and only demonstrates their lack of experience with said console: RS2 is better than CT will ever be. RS2 has actual non-linearity, with non-traditional leveling. You have proficiencies for various weapon types (like bows, spears, etc.). You learn new skills by "sparking" techs, i.e. attacking with a certain weapon. The stronger the enemies you fight, the higher is your chance of learning a new skill (albeit that also depends on the class and type of your characters; a hunter is more likely to spark bow techs than a ninja). Enemies (and some bosses) scale passively, and high battle rank enemies are really devastating. It's generation-based, so while playing through the game, you play through an entire lineage of emperors, and how the empire evolves is entirely dependent on your actions; doing a certain amount of quests causes a generation skip to occur. There's also permadeath in the game: each character has a fixed amount of LP (life points), which, when depleted, causes a character to die permanently (in the case of your emperor, you'll have to appoint a new one). Sleeping at an inn does not regenerate your LP. Defense is separated into 8 categories, Blunt, Slashing, Piercing, Projectile, Heat, Cold, Electric, "Status" (this doesn't really mean status effects, it means magic damage that doesn't fit into the other categories, like dark curses or weird star magic) Since you can't just pump 1 "def" stat you'll be swapping defensive gear around to deal with different enemy types and also probably be supplementing your defenses with utility spells. Utility spells are a BIG deal. Status effects are useful against bosses but how a status effect is applied matters. "Stun" comes from both Sweep and Feint (and a bunch of other sources), but Sweep only works on enemies that actually have legs, and Feint only works on enemies that are actually holding a weapon, etc. It's a really good JRPG and marks the peak of SFC/SNES JRPGs. »
