RimWorld, développé et publié par Ludeon Studios, est sorti le 17 octobre 2018 sur PC, Mac et Linux. Ce simulateur de colonie science-fiction, construit sous Unity, plonge le joueur dans la gestion de trois survivants d'un naufrage spatial sur une planète lointaine, avec un narrateur IA qui génère des récits en simulant psychologie, écologie, combat ou diplomatie. Le titre, classé dans les genres simulation, stratégie, indépendant et RTS, propose un monde généré procéduralement où les colons, aux passés et traits variés, développent des relations, soignent leurs blessures via prothèses ou implants, et affrontent pirates, tribus ou bêtes hostiles à travers biomes allant de la toundra à la jungle.
La presse a salué l'œuvre comme une nouvelle référence du genre, Strategy Gamer évoquant un « nouveau standard en survie et stratégie » émergeant d'accès anticipé avec grâce, tandis que Hooked Gamers soulignait la constance de l'engagement sur des centaines d'heures via des histoires en perpétuel changement. Certains joueurs sur Metacritic et Steam expriment leur enthousiasme pour la liberté d'action et le storytelling unique de chaque partie, l'un d'eux citant un colon sombrant dans la folie meurtrière à cause de toilettes bouchées, même si un avis Steam relève un point négatif non détaillé lié à l'extrême complexité. Le jeu affiche un score Metacritic de 87, un OpenCritic de 86 et une note agrégée de 84,89, pour un prix de 31,99 euros et des durées de jeu de 63 heures pour l'histoire principale et 300 heures en complétionniste.
