Ratchet & Clank, développé par Insomniac Games et édité par Sony Computer Entertainment, est sorti le 4 novembre 2002 sur PlayStation 2. Ce jeu mêlant plateforme, aventure et tir met en scène Ratchet, un Lombax furry travaillant sur sa soucoupe sur la planète Veldin, et Clank, un petit robot tombé du ciel, qui s'allient pour contrer le président Drek et son superarme le Deplanetizer. L'aventure se déploie sur plus de vingt niveaux planétaires aux environnements détaillés sans brouillard de distance, incluant des sous-jeux comme des combats spatiaux et des séquences de tir en première personne, avec une progression non linéaire et un arsenal varié. La presse a salué sa cohérence d'ensemble, l'Official U.S. Playstation Magazine notant que peu de plateformers avaient réuni autant d'éléments avec une telle réussite, tandis que Cinescape relevait un style rappelant les classiques de la science-fiction. Certains joueurs regrettent en revanche une mobilité de Ratchet perçue comme lourde, et l'un d'eux a qualifié la mission finale de honteuse en raison de sa rudesse. « A shameful game. I didn't expect it to be this rude and malicious in the final mission with the last monster. I could have finished it, but the least I did was turn off the device, delete it, and erase all its remaining recordings. It belongs in the trash. Stay away from this awful game. »

« Ratchet and Clank is a nice old-school game to play, I had fun playing this game until the end. The graphics were okay even considering the time, the best thing of this was the addicting gameplay that it provided me. I was missing playing games like that. The criticism that I have is the awkward controller that was frustrating for me as well as how the game is broken in a bad way, like there were some few bugs such as being stuck in invisible walls and a bad camera. My final rating is 7.6, but I am rounding up to 8. »
