Classé dans le genre hack 'n' slash / beat 'em up, le jeu propose un monde composé d'îles inexplorées que le joueur parcourt aidé par des Pokémon puissants et un esprit de découverte, ces îles abritant de nombreux Pokémon.

Concernant l'accueil critique, Nintendo Life a salué un jeu charmant et amusant pour les amateurs de collection, tout en relevant une fonction cartographique maladroite et la nécessité de raffiner du minerai. De son côté, Jeuxvideo.com a estimé que Pokémon Rumble Rush peine à captiver le joueur en raison d'un gameplay limité, bien que l'élargissement progressif de la collection reste divertissant. Sur Metacritic, certains joueurs ont exprimé leur satisfaction par une longue répétition du terme « nice », tandis qu'un autre a déploré une répétitivité excessive et un système de minerai qu'il juge cassé, précisant avoir à remplacer un minerai précieux lorsqu'il en obtient plus de trois.

« Pokémon Rumble Rush is a charming game, and fun for those who like collecting things. However, the awkward map feature and the requirement of refining ore to get gears to boost the Pokémon mean it can be a needlessly frustrating grind, and the inclusion of a two-week deadline between area swaps, there's the perhaps some unwelcome added pressure thrown into the mix as well. As we all perhaps expected, this free-to-play Pokémon outing doesn't set the world on fire, but the truly dedicated fans who have followed the Rumble series this far will enjoy it all the same. »

« This game is way too repetitive, honestly. Not only that, but the ore system is broken because I get more than 3 and have to replace a valuable one. After that, I get more ores and I have to keep replacing them over and over again. The game then becomes a big grind as soon as you hit the first island. But... at least there's game-play. It kinda brought me to the 3DS days, but that's all I give it credit for. »
