Outward
Description (IGDB)
Outward is an open world RPG that you play alone or with friends, either online or in splitscreen. It's more than just an open world RPG you can play coop though: it is an adventurer life simulator. You live the life of an adventurer, from his or her humble beginnings up until retirement. Your life isn't only about killing monsters and looting: you need to eat, drink and sleep; preparing accordingly before jumping into danger. Everything is meant to feel more real and consequential, while still taking place in a high fantasy universe with magic and exotic creatures.

Delaying the launch of Outward 2
Hi everyone,I know that this might seem sudden as not that long ago we released a trailer inviting people to explore Aurai during summer, but the truth is that if we just stick to the plan stubbornly, we’re delivering a product that might not satisfy your expectations. The last thing we want to do is disappoint fans of Outward and there has been a lot of comments stating that they wish for the game to spend more time in development before the launch. The point of a Beta is to listen to feedback, and so we will.Dropping this news is especially painful knowing that some of our most dedicated players actually planned their summer break around the release date. It sucks for you and I personally apologize to everyone affected this way. However, it would be even worse if you ended up playing something over your vacation that you were not even happy with. It’s hard to gauge what is the appropriate degree of stability expected for Early Access. The best we can do is take a hard, honest look at the game, and at our team, and ask: in a few weeks, will this be good enough to charge money for? Our aim is to have such a stark jump between this Beta and the Early Access launch that we earn the trust of our players. You were there for the first Outward and that’s why we were successful. We want you to be happy to be there again for Outward 2.Thank you to everyone who participated in the Beta and our earlier playtests, who provided feedback, who shared our news, talked with us directly during streams or on Discord. I apologize that we couldn’t give you the game you guys deserve on time. I guess that’s the game development’s equivalent of a defeat scenario: a setback and we come back better prepared.Guillaume AKA GheeyomCEO and Creative Director

« Outward is harsh and occasionally frustrating, but it does what so few games do. It requires you to put real thought into the choices you make, and it makes those choices feel like they really matter. Most of all, it makes you approach each and every encounter as if your life depended on it—even though you never die. »
« Outward is a fun and unique experience for those who desire the harder type of gameplay reminiscent of Souls like games. »
« Outward is a tough game to review because I know there are a ton of people that are going to pick this thing up and absolutely detest it, and, as I said, sometimes I felt that way myself. For the right kind of person, though, this game is going to scratch an itch that not many others can. Because of its relatively niche appeal, I don’t see Outward breaking any sales records, but it does seem like a game destined to be revered in the right circles for quite some time. »
« Although certainly not technically impressive, the amount of fresh ideas, innovative mechanics and interwoven systems make this a survival RPG experience like no other. A punishingly difficult game that will reward those who put in patience and disparage fast play. Heartily recommended. »
« This is a great choice of old-school RPG fans, with many, many good ideas, and only a few issues preventing it from being something excellent. »
« Outward is a special videogame capable of the best and the worst. It's not a typical videogame, and that is something noticeable. »
« Outward mixes elements of survival games and the old school RPG virtues, but its creators needed more time and money to create a memorable experience. It is a big map, there are many things to do and it is a difficult journey. However, all that is not enough for him to work perfectly. There are technical errors. If you want a challenge and remember another time of RPGs, enter in its spell. »
« Outward is a survival RPG that might seem a bit chaotic at first, but it might be able to entertain those who can overcome its many flaws. »
Avis des Joueurs (Metacritic)
« Outward brings us something rarely seen in modern games - the sense of adventure and the freedom to fail. While you can feel some of the indie jank, the world is full of things to do and work towards. It's not the usual "NPC on every corner" strategy that developers tend to employ lately. The lands are quite barren and you have to work up to even the starting zone enemies. But what it does is puts importance on your choices and actions and forces you to plan and think on how you're going to approach whatever you want to do. And you really can do anything. Go anywhere. If you can only manage to survive ;) The voice acting is minimal but it does it's job. I have to give praise to voice actors as the quality of their work is rarely seen in indie games. There is a lot of unfavourable opinions about voice acting but I think people dislike WHEN and WHAT the lines are saying not necessarily the quality of acting itself, which I personally find surprisingly well performed. For such a small team, this is a grand achievement and one of the rare games that can offer something different to others - hence why they garnered widespread acclaim and more dedicated players than you will ever see on some AAA MMORPGs these days. The game does what it intends to do very well and with a bigger team, bigger budget and this added development experience I will definitely keep an eye on Outward 2 and other possible releases from Nine Dots Studio. There is definitely a heart there but not lacking the attention to detail, optimization and QoL for the players. Anyone who engages in games regularly and reads the news on the topic will know, that this already is more than enough to pay attention to the studio, as respect for the community, love for the world their creating and unrestrained imagination is something that cannot be bought with any amount of AAA money. »
« Outward is a great game. I read numerous reviews saying that it is hard or not fair. It's wrong. It's not a soul like. Just there is no levelling. Your avatar will grow with his stuff and skill. The survival part is fair and easy if you take time to understand how it works. Outward got middle review because it breaks some RPG video game modern logic. You won't know if a monster is too strong without trying. You will have to learn the patterns. But it doesn't try to kill you at every movement, and it's not hard when you take time to search for stuff and skill. 100 hours and I will continue to play again and again.... »
« I'm not one to give reviews or ever 10's when it comes to stuff. Especially media. Speaking of media; Media isn't a one size fits all. Some movies you will never be able to enjoy. Some games we can never quite get behind. Rpgs have become stale, unfinished, and leave us wanting more and more from them over time. Even with a million expansion or key features that many gamers crave are still left out. Outward breaks from this patternized behaviors and removes many dependencies we have leaned on for the sake of an immersive and classic experience. It is most definitely a cult following game. Yes, the sequle looks 10x more promising. However, I haven't been so ensnared my a game since I was a child. zits tough, it goes from peaceful to gritty, no one holds your hand and it is a sandbox in the largest of definitions. The story can wait, take the time and effort enjoy the world. There are no levels, only literal experience and artifacts for you to either sell or use to your aid. It isn't skyrim or souls, but if you do enjoy souls but wish souls had a bit more world building and immersive experience where you play as someone relatively...normal. This is it. You go from 0 and have to build to 100. I highly recommend this game for a co-op experience, at least for the first playthrough. However the game stands alone in its own class of rpg that no longer exists with large developers. It is a lite-dnd experience that delivers a promise of hardwork and research for a even bigger pay-off. »
« I was interested in playing this game because people told me it bore similarities to Gothic and Gothic II. It does but with some survival genre aspects that weren't to my personal liking. For example, there is a heavy weight restriction on character inventory and the food you cook or harvest expires fairly quickly. The game has seasonal cycles that require you to hold onto gear that helps you deal with hot or cold temperatures but considering you can't hold much, this is frustrating. There are few quests, as the game leans more heavily into the survival sandbox aspects rather than questlines. That said, you can mod the game to make it more like Gothic and that helped me connect with it more strongly. As the developer has said this was more of an experiment, I'm looking forward to seeing their improvements on this interesting RPG when they release Outward 2. Lots of interesting stuff in this game and this developer is definitely on my radar as a result. »
« Gosto muito desse jogo, a fato de você não ser ninguém e ter que ir evoluindo aos poucos é muito legal. Amo o fato de não ter viagem rápida e todas as mecânicas mais realistas, que para muito pode ser irritante (sede, fome, frio, peso, ter que soltar a mochila para lutar), então avalie bem se é do seu agrado. »
« Gigantic disappointment. Bad story, bad gameplay and empty open **** combat is horrendous and needlessly clumsy. The price is wayyyy to high for what it is. The devs are stubborn and unfriendly. Major thumbs down forOutward »
« When I heard about this game I was very excited because it seemed to be similar to Gothic 1 & 2, however, I was ultimately disappointed because for the following reasons: - World feels too big, and a bit empty - No fast travel - No mount or some ability to move around fast - No manual save - Too small inventory limit - Janky combat - Starting area/home is on the upper left corner of the map instead of the center of the map - Story and characters are boring / almost no quests at starting area - Graphics are outdated On their own these issues wouldn't be big deal, but combined together they create this situation where it makes me want to NOT explore: - going too far is annoying because then you need to walk all the way back to the vendor on foot (since no mount or fast travel) - usually for 5-10+ minutes because it's on the edge of the map instead of center - engaging in combat is off-putting because combat is bad, meaning I can die easily because of unfair reasons, and I have no manual save to save and just try out to fight some enemy, and even if I win it just feels like a high-risk low reward, because I can't loot weapon + armor due to inventory limit - In case my backpack is almost full then I kind of don't want to explore dungeons either because why would I if I cannot loot anything? - Trying out different weapons/builds is not that much viable because even with just one extra weapon you are already over the inventory limit... So what is the appeal of this game? Is it a walking/hunting simulator where you just go out to nature and enjoy the beautiful view? Well no because the graphics are kind of ugly/outdated too, so... I guess it's more like a survival game? As a survival game, it's fine, there is a nice crafting system, you go hungry, and thirsty, have to wear adequate outfits for different weather, etc. so in that aspect, I think they did a good job with this game. All in all, I feel like I would enjoy this game much more if they made the following changes: 1. Fast travel to places we have already visited - maybe give us some teleporting stone or something like in Gothic for an immersive way to fast travel 2. Double the inventory size of all backpacks - 50 is too little for starting where you wanna try out different weapons and are unsure about build 3. Either add a mount (ex. horse or something) that we can ride, or add some easy-to-craft movement speed potion that would double our movement speed 4. Add a main chest that is "shared" between areas - ex. if I store something in the main chest in City A, I should be able to retrieve it from the main chest in City B But as of now, I can't recommend this game unless you want to play CO-OP because it really feels like this game doesn't respect your time at all. The fact that we don't have what would be the very simple quality of life changes that I mentioned above, leads me to believe this was an intentional decision by the developer because they want to target a specific audience, and I seem to not be part fo this audience. Disclaimer: This review is purely based on my single-player experience. »
« A lot of people have mentioned that this game is difficult. That's fine. I'm okay with the fact that on the map you aren't given your location. I'm fine with the lack of fast travel as tedious as it is. What I can't get over is how unnecessarily grindy the economy is and the garbage combat with no real skill. I'm a gamer that enjoys a challenge. I have played and beaten all of the souls games and many others like them. I love a combat system that rewards timely dodges and parries, but in this game the blocking and recovery after a weapon swing make combat a game of patience and armor statistics. Hitboxes make no sense and no matter how I try spacing just doesn't work. I really wanted to like this game since I'm always on the lookout for Local Splitscreen games I can play with my girlfriend, but after 6-7 hours I just can't find a reason to keep going. This is nothing like Dark Souls, there is no skill in this combat system. »
