Sorti le 14 septembre 2004, NHL 2005 est un jeu de simulation sportive développé par EA Black Box et édité par EA Sports, disponible sur PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox et Nintendo GameCube. Successeur de NHL 2004, le titre propose la fonctionnalité EA Sports Open Ice Control permettant d'exécuter des actions offensives comme le jeu de passe et la réception et d'appeler des doubles marquages défensifs, tandis que le mode Dynastie s'enrichit de relations plus interactives entre le joueur et les rôles de directeur général ou de propriétaire via un nouveau système de courriers électroniques. NHL 2005 inclut également la Coupe du monde de hockey avec des équipes internationales et des arénas d'Amérique du Nord et d'Europe. La presse a salué la qualité de sa physique réaliste, comme l'a relevé Xbox Nation Magazine qui jugeait le titre à part sur cette fonction essentielle du jeu de hockey, tandis que Worth Playing recommandait le jeu aux amateurs de sports mais regrettait des commandes trop complexes pour les joueurs occasionnels. L'ensemble affiche une note moyenne agrégée de 81,44.
