GamePro 100/100

« One main feature that clearly separates Underground from other street racers is its visual presentation. The nighttime glow in the metropolis does take some time to get used to, but the evening air quickly adds to the stunning scenery and detailed avenues as you travel at high RPMs. »

Game Informer 95/100

« With online play, a great assortment of well-known tuner cars, a killer soundtrack, and some addictive gameplay, Need for Speed: Underground blows the doors off other racers. It gets my vote for racing game of the year, easy. [Dec 2003, p.126] »

GamingWorld X 92/100

« The very best in it’s class, paying close attention to the culture in which the game is tailored after, and offering great gameplay to back up the gorgeous graphics and thousands of upgrades for the hoarder in you. »

Play Magazine 91/100

« Pulling it all together is razor-sharp presentation, incredible city construction and track design, and a use of sound and mixed tunes that is unrivaled in the genre; praise to EA for bypassing the numbing of ill-placed techno. [Dec 2003, p.62] »

Warcry 91/100

« One of the most entertaining racing experiences ever, as was expected. Racing underground has been done before, but this game does it right. If you liked other NFS games, you will definitely love this installment. »

GMR Magazine 90/100

« Combining the reckless, breakneck speed and high-impact collisions of "Burnout" with the neon-tipped street culture of Fast and the Furious (and, more specifically, "Midnight Club II"), Underground is the new definition of white-knuckle. »

Next Level Gaming 90/100

« Not only does it have 20 of the hottest cars in the world, but customizing them is half the fun. And you can play this game online, which is a big must for the PS2 right now. »

GameSpy 90/100

« A fantastic racer for those that want tons of cool customizations and huge single-player challenges, but gamers looking for a more traditional arcade racer might need to approach NFSU with the following in mind -- it's tons of fun, it looks amazing, and it's best on PS2, but be prepared to witness a perceptive lack of variety, and one huge-ass single-player challenge. »

« Cool. not setting a car goal in front of me to own back made me connect with the car that I own rather than change it after every race because of knowing you will dump your starter car to get your first expensive ass car back type ****. I LOVE MY PEUGEOUT 206 »

« Need For Speed Underground Is The Perfect NFS Game If You Don't Mind Closed Tracks. The Game Still Feels Great- It Has Good Handling, Visuals, And An Amazing Soundtrack. The Game Is Known For Constantly Playing Through The Same Tracks And It's Difficulty, But These Actually Help You. It May Seem Like A Pain But They Make You Learn Through Trial And Error, And Master Everything. The Game Has A Great Selection Of Cars- And Overall Great Visual Customization For Its Time, Same With Good Tuning Setups. I'd Recommend Playing It Today Through Emulation Or Physical Copies If Your Looking For A Great And Fast Street Racing Game. »

« Still the best arcade racer ever in 2025. Modding community is amazing. Allows for native 4k, unlocked frame rate and post processing effects to bring the game into the modern era. Would still play even if it was only on the gamecube. »

Meta333 9/10

« One of my all-time favorite games overall and certainly a top racing game. this and underground 2 were absolutely mesmerizing. the love that went into this was obvious and true car fans will appreciate the depth of detail »

Agent008 8/10

« "Underground" easily sits next to "Gran Tursimo" as one of the best racing games on the PS2. It was the first racer to capitalize on the success of "The Fast and The Furious". With its slick graphics, a superb sense of speed and great soundtrack, the game looks and sounds great. But it's the car tuner customization that really elevates it. This is a better game than its sequel. I would rate it with an 8.5 out of 10. »

« NFSU1 is by far the most iconic Tuner/street racing game in the world and probably the game that gave Need For Speed the biggest jump on their competition. Even though Juiced, Midnight Club and even Blackbox' sequals where better for some people, you can't deny any of the huge inovations this game introduced: Customisable cars, drag and drift modes, an improved soundtrack and some of the best track design for a PS2 game. The "story mode" is a bit underwhelming but you do get custom visual mods and performance upgrades that make your cars even faster. The handling is tweaked for every event type but it works really well so you can do propper slides now in your riced Mitsubishi Lancer ES. And finally the customisation, I'ts superb. A **** ton of bumpers, spoilers, rims, decals, vinyls, colours and even widebody kits. With these you can make a Golf GTI, Dodge Neon, Toyota Celica or any of 20 cars look pretty good. Unless you don't. »
