Disponible sur PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch et Xbox One, ce titre réalisé sous Unity place le joueur dans un pays autrefois libre mais désormais dirigé par un gouvernement paranoïaque, où le héros décide de s'opposer au régime en construisant un abri souterrain et en fabriquant une machine pour fuir à travers la frontière. Le joueur doit bâtir cet abri, crafts des équipements comme des potagers ou des véhicules, échanger avec ses voisins et se méfier des services secrets, le tout dans un paysage marqué par la menace d'une guerre nucléaire. Classé parmi les genres aventure, simulation, RPG, indépendant et point-and-click, le jeu affiche un temps de parcours principal d'environ 13 heures et demi et près de 47 heures pour une approche complétiste, pour un prix de 19,50 euros et une note agrégée de 67,13.
L'accueil critique s'est révélé mitigé. TheXboxHub a salué une bonne idée mais regretté des contrôles douteux et des problèmes bloquants, notamment sur manette, tandis que Movies Games and Tech a noté un potentiel intéressant malgré une expérience en demi-teinte. Du côté des joueurs, certains sur Metacritic ont souligné l'attrait du concept de bunker paranoïaque sous régime totalitaire et l'immersion narrative initiale, et un avis positif sur Steam témoigne d'une partie addictive avec la formule « Allez, encore une journée et j'arrête ».

« A great idea sadly lessened as an experience by dodgy controls and game breaking issues held within. Perhaps a future patch to optimise things for a controller might increase playability but with Mr. Prepper we sadly didn’t escape Murricaville… we got trapped in our own bunker. »

« Mr. Prepper doesn’t turn out to be the nuclear catastrophe it initially convinces you it will be. It survives the radioactive onslaught by the skin of it’s dank, burrowed out teeth. There’s something strange in this that can be recommended, but only to those who have a penchant for the suvivalist, resource-management genre. For everyone else, the threat of impending destruction on the surface is likely more preferable to the solitude and depression of the bunker. »

« The whole paranoid bunker-building under a totalitarian regime is such a strong hook. Early on, the vibe and story really pull you in. Managing your shelter while pretending to be a loyal citizen is genuinely cool. But the time system is brutal. A simple walk across the house eats half your day. Try crafting, exploring, and keeping the inspector happy and suddenly you’ve accomplished nothing. It quickly turns into a grind fest with questionable balance and some janky combat. Great idea but way too much grind for me. »
