Sorti le 11 août 2015, Fishing Planet est un simulateur de pêche en ligne multijoueur à la première personne développé et édité par Fishing Planet LLC. Proposé en free-to-play sur une large gamme de plateformes — PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch ainsi que mobile (Android, iOS) —, le titre se positionne comme une expérience réaliste conçue par des pêcheurs passionnés, fonctionnant sur le moteur Unity. Le jeu mélange les genres simulation et sport, offrant un environnement où les conditions météorologiques dynamiques, le cycle jour-nuit, les saisons et la topographie des fonds influencent le comportement de plus de 200 espèces de poissons gérées par une intelligence artificielle complexe.
L'univers du jeu s'étend sur 26 cours d'eau photoréalistes répartis à travers le monde, couvrant aussi bien la pêche en eau douce qu'en eau salée. Quatre techniques principales sont représentées : la pêche au flotteur, au lancer, de fond et à la traîne en mer. L'équipement propose des milliers de combinaisons de matériel et de leurres aux propriétés physiques et hydrodynamiques distinctes, chaque espèce réagissant et combattant selon son comportement réel. Côté navigation, le joueur dispose de kayaks et de trois types de bateaux à moteur, tandis que des yachts de pêche océanique, équipés de porte-cannes, de stockage et de la technologie Sonar 360, permettent la pêche en groupe jusqu'à quatre joueurs sur un même bateau. L'immersion est renforcée par des graphiques aquatiques dynamiques réagissant au vent et au courant, ainsi que par des sons d'environnement.
Une mise à jour majeure intitulée « Back to Basics - First Levels Rework » a été déployée ultérieurement, repensant entièrement le Lac Lone Star et apportant des améliorations à d'autres lieux ainsi qu'au gameplay global. Cette mise à jour introduit notamment une Salle des trophées offrant aux pêcheurs un espace personnel pour exposer leurs plus belles prises, tout en ajoutant de nouvelles missions.
Côté réception, le jeu affiche une note agrégée de 47,39. La presse spécialisée, à l'image de Destructoid, a salué un simulateur solide doté d'une profondeur et d'une variété de mécaniques incitant à y revenir. Du côté des joueurs, les avis mettent en avant une variété exceptionnelle de cartes et d'objets qui favorise la progression, le qualifiant pour certains de meilleur titre de sa catégorie, tandis que d'autres signalent la présence de révélations sur l'intrigue ou laissent des appréciations très synthétiques.

« I like the different areas and fish, but what I don't like is the other online gamers always getting in my face or trying to block me from catching the fish I need for the missions. I do my best to find open areas when I play the game to give other players room to fish and enjoy the game. »

« I tried this out in May of 2021, well after it came out by several years, in my book that's PLENTY of time for them to iron out any bugs and polish up all the annoyances... Sadly they seem to have done absolutely nothing in that amount of time except release more cashgrab DLC. Graphically the game suffers from screen tearing if you turn too fast, repetitive textures on plants, and overall just looks like someone bought all the assets from the cheap premade section of the game dev resources store. Controls are limited and clunky, your movespeed is a snail's crawl unless you sprint, casting your line isn't explained in the tutorial and you have to figure out how to do more than dangle the line into the water yourself, and the ingame menus are absolutely atrocious: using both the L and R sticks as well as the D pad for completely different sections of menus that are absurdly un-optimized for console. Sound wise the game's design is virtually non-existent, I had to check if my TV was muted more than once out of concern that I couldn't hear any splashing or really anything. Even after turning the game's internal volume settings to maximum the game still sounded too quiet, and there wasn't much to listen to anyway. There are plenty of pesky bugs in this game, as well. I experienced frequent hang-ups that made me think the game had frozen, both in menus and during fishing, which is pretty absurd when almost nothing is happening on screen, there's no real excuse for this either since they've apparently known about these problems for years. Catching fish in "Fishing Planet" is a boring repetitive chore, and many games where fishing is NOT EVEN THE MAIN FOCUS do it leaps and bounds better. you'd be FAR better off playing that Final Fantasy fishing mini-game or the VR game than this. »
« Tried playing the game on PS4. Got to the tutorial and the game glitched so no fish would bite...which was what that section of the tutorial was trying to teach. So I **** to recreate my character (which is no big deal since the game only provides you with 12-16 different options for customization), this time the tutorial went on without hitch. It was when I needed to changed gameplay settings that I quit and deleted. Nothing I did would allow me to enter the settings to change from imperial measurements, change music volume ect ect. Not X, not O, not Triangle....nada. Pure waste of precious minutes of my life. »
